Such a great outcome for Karmala Sass and owner Jan. Congratulations 🎊

If you're wanting some breeding work done, don't hesitate to get in touch.

Excited to announce the first of our TCI(Trans Cervical Insemination) litters. I’ve been very interested to try the method since hearing about it years ago. Now thanks to Adriana aka Best Little Vet on the Prairie, it’s become a reality. Sass had eight little pups today!

MEDIA RELEASE | Veterinarians urge vigilance and vaccination following Hendra virus case in Queensland

Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA), a special interest group of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA), has reinforced the importance of vaccination and biosecurity after Biosecurity Queensland today confirmed a case of Hendra virus in an unvaccinated horse in south-east Queensland.

Dr Laura Hardefeldt, EVA President, expressed strong support for the veterinarian who managed the case and reiterated the critical role of horse owners in preventing the spread of this deadly disease.

“We commend the referral veterinarian for their swift and professional response, which undoubtedly helped contain the risk to people and other animals,” said Dr Hardefeldt.

“This case is a stark reminder that Hendra virus remains a real and present threat. Vaccination is the best defence we have to protect horses, veterinarians, and the broader community.”

Canine Gastrointestinal Parasites

Dog are the most commonly owned pet in Australia, with an estimated population of 6.3 million.
Only 28% of dog owners follow best practice prophylaxis guidelines I.e. administered prophylactic treatment all-year round.
High correlation to socioeconomic status and postcode.
At least 14 species of canine GI parasites are potentially zoonotic (Transmitted to humans).
Giardia, Hookworm, Toxocara, Tapeworm to name a few.
Dog parks identified as high risk of exposure to dogs and humans -> Hookworm being the most common parasite identified in the soil.
Hookworm is also the most common intestinal parasite of dogs in Australia, with resistance to Pyrantel identified 15 years ago and recently confirmed in a UQ research paper.
Astoundingly, 34% of dog owners use products that only contain Pyrantel resulting in the inefficacious treatment and prevention of Hookworm and Whipworm.
Research from Drontal claims that Febantel in combination with Pyrantel, have a synergistic effect in treating roundworm and hookworm. Claim 99% efficacy.

Japanese Encephalitis Virus has been detected in two QLD piggeries. Spread by mosquitos, JEV is a notifiable zoonotic disease and as such is of concern to humans, pigs and horses.

Minimising mosquito exposure for both yourself and your horses is important in reducing risk. FarmBiosecurity have this handy guide for mosquito management: https://www.farmbiosecurity.com.au/livestock/horses/mosquito-management-for-horses/

I am excited to announce that my very first TCI in a bitch was scanned positive with 5 healthy puppies yesterday. This is a great result for the owner Avril and dog Lola, who has failed to fall pregnant in her last 3 cycles.

TCI (transcervical insemination) is where a scope is used to visualise the dogs cervix and then pass a catheter to deposit semen directly into the uterus. This technique now surpasses surgical AI.

If you'd like to know more, please feel free to message me.
