It's been a while since I posted something informative. This was a clients Frenchie that I consulted and referred for surgery. Check out the video!

🐾The Importance of a Tail🐾

Recently, I examined a French Bulldog named Tilly who had a severely inverted corkscrew tail. As a result of this tail deformity, she was experiencing a range of painful and frustrating symptoms, including:

* Scooting her bottom along the ground
* Sitting awkwardly and swaying from side to side
* Impacted a**l glands
* Painful skin pocket dermatitis around the tail

Despite her owner’s diligent care, keeping the area clean and comfortable had become an ongoing challenge.

Tilly was referred to a veterinary surgeon, who performed a tail amputation. The surgery relieved her discomfort and dramatically improved her quality of life.

Cases like Tilly’s highlight why tail structure is an important consideration when breeding and choosing a puppy.

Dogs with a natural, functional tail - such as those with one or no copies of the DVL2 gene variant - are far less likely to develop the deep skin folds and severe corkscrew tail deformities that can lead to chronic irritation, infection and the need for corrective surgery.

While some dogs with screw tails have only a mild curl and never experience problems, others can develop painful skin pockets and restricted movement. In more severe cases, the malformed vertebrae that create the corkscrew tail can also reduce the spine’s natural flexibility, making it difficult for the dog to properly clean itself.

A tail is far more than a cosmetic feature - it plays an important role in a dog’s comfort, hygiene, movement and overall wellbeing.
