Beachside Veterinary Hospital

Beachside Veterinary Hospital After graduating with honours from the University of Sydney in 1994 Cate moved to Northern Victoria to work in a mixed dairy practice.

She worked there for the next 3 years developing her skills in both small and large animal medicine and surgery. It was here she met her husband. At the beginning of 1998 they moved to the United Kingdom where Cate worked as a locum in a variety of small and mixed practices for almost 2 years gaining broad experience and exposure to varying techniques. On her return to Australia she was invited to

become a partner in the Northern Victorian practice where she had worked as a new graduate. At that time a branch practice was purchased which became Cate’s “baby” and with the assistance of dedicated staff it grew into a strong performing practice in its own right. Throughout the past 17 years Cate has done all the required continuing education plus extra study in both small animal surgery and ultrasonography. In 2011 she completed a 4 year Masters degree in small animal practice through Murdoch University in Perth. During this period she and her husband have been raising 3 beautiful daughters and their family dog “Kevin the Kelpie”. In 2015 following the devastating ANZAC Day earthquake Cate volunteered to travel to Nepal to be one of only three experienced cattle vets to be in the country to provide veterinary support for the sacred animals which represent the backbone of Nepalese society. It was the most professionally rewarding experience of her career and she hopes to be able to do more volunteering in the future. Cate moved north in 2016 to avoid the cold weather of Victoria and after six months working in a local clinic she recognises she has something different to offer, taking advantage of her broad experience, her commitment to professionalism and the latest techniques. After starting Beachside in January 2017, the business has grown from a mobile service to a small clinic in Yorkeys K**b, and since July 2023 the fully equiped hospital facility in Smithfield from which we operate today

Cate projects a bright and cheery manner and has a strong passion for animal care and support for clients. She and her highly dedicated team will always strive for the best outcome for both owner and pet.

😍Toohey recently visited the clinic after becoming lame and refusing to bear weight on his left hind leg. Radiographs revealed a dislocated hip that could not be manually repositioned, so FHO surgery was recommended as the best treatment option 🐶🩺

🍖FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) surgery is commonly used to treat painful hip conditions such as hip dislocations, arthritis, fractures, and hip dysplasia.

🕖The procedure removes the “ball” of the hip joint to relieve pain and improve mobility. During recovery, surrounding muscles and tissues help form a “false joint,” allowing many dogs to return to happy, active lives 💙

If you think your pup is suffering from arthritis or joint pain, call us on 07 4057 8677 and book a consultation today!

❓What is BOAS? (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome)❓

🐶Does your dog have a flat face, breathe heavily, or make “funny” snorting and whistling noises? While often considered normal for flat-faced breeds, these sounds can actually be signs of breathing difficulties. 🐽

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) is common in breeds such as Pug, French Bulldog, Bulldog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Narrow nostrils, elongated soft palates, and other airway changes can make breathing difficult, even during everyday activities.

⚠Signs to watch for include:
• Snorting or noisy breathing
• Loud snoring
• Excessive panting
• Wheezing after exercise
• Reflux signs like lip smacking, gulping, coughing, or hacking
• Reduced exercise tolerance

These signs are not normal and should be checked by a veterinarian. Early treatment can greatly improve your dog’s comfort and quality of life.

Call us today on 07 4057 8677 to book a BOAS consultation, and help both you and your pup breathe a little easier!

😍Meet Axe! This little trooper came in feeling pretty rough—white gums, low energy, not eating, and some very dark poos 💔
Tests revealed the culprit: hookworm 🐛

💉Little Axe was a very sick boy—he even needed a blood transfusion, kindly donated by Dr. Cate’s dog, Maggie Magoo 🐾❤️

🚑After a few days in hospital (and some amazing care from his owners), Axe is now on the road to recovery—getting stronger every day and back to barking up a storm! 🐶✨

At Beachside, we believe prevention is better than cure—parasites can hit hard and treatment can be tough and costly, but staying protected is simple.

Give us a call on 07 4057 8677 to make sure your pet has the best prevention available 💛.

😍Summer came into the clinic for her regular skin check (which also comes with belly rubs & cuddles!)

👀Have a quick feel through your dog’s coat to catch lumps, bumps, parasites, or irritation early—before they turn into bigger issues. It’s one of the easiest ways to stay on top of their overall health.

It's Hairball Awareness Day! Hairballs: gross, normal… and occasionally a problem 🐱🤢

👅Cats swallow loose hair when grooming, which can come back up as those lovely little “surprises” on your floor (not actually balls—more like sausages 🙃).
🚨Most are harmless, but if a hairball gets stuck, it can become serious. Otherwise? Expect the occasional gift and carry on 😅

Tips for Prevention:
• Brush regularly (less hair = less swallowing)
• Feed a hairball formula or use vet-approved diets/supplements
• Keep them hydrated 💧
• Keep them active with play

🚩 Red flags: ongoing vomiting, not eating, lethargy, or lots of unsuccessful retching 👉 If you notice these, call us on 07 0457 8677.
