Always great advice from Dr Becker !!!

🧠 OLDER DOG CONFUSED, ANXIOUS, UP AT NIGHT OR HAVING ACCIDENTS?

Changes inside an aging dog’s brain may begin years before obvious cognitive problems appear.

Research highlighted in a 2025 systematic review found that by age 6, glucose metabolism in some regions of the Beagle brain can decline by as much as 25%.

Glucose is normally the brain’s primary fuel. As dogs age, their brains can become less efficient at using it.

But there’s another fuel the brain can use: KETONES.

🥥 That’s where MCTs come in.
MCTs are rapidly converted into ketones, providing aging brain cells with an alternative source of energy.

A very high-quality trial, highlighted in the 2025 systematic review published in GeroScience, studied older dogs fed an enriched diet containing MCTs + DHA/EPA omega-3s, and after just 90 days, dogs improved across EVERY cognitive dysfunction category evaluated, including:

🌙 Sleep/wake problems
😟 Anxiety
🧠 Confusion/disorientation
🏠 House-training problems
🧩 Learning and memory
🐕 Activity and social interaction

🐟 So how can you add some of these nutrients to your dog’s bowl?

Dr. Karen Becker’s Roe Mega™ combines MCT oil with marine EPA + DHA from sustainably sourced herring caviar, but there’s another fascinating nutrition connection: LP815™, a probiotic strain in Dr. Becker’s Primitive Probiotics™, has also been studied in dogs, with research showing improvements in anxiety-related behaviors and more consistent sleep.

🍉 WHY I’M FEEDING MY DOG WATERMELON THIS SUMMER

Watermelon isn’t just a refreshing summer treat—it’s packed with nutrients that can benefit your dog’s health. 🐶❤️

Here are a few reasons it’s one of my favorite seasonal snacks:

🍉 💦 It’s about 92% water.
Perfect for helping your pup stay hydrated during hot summer days.

❤️ 🫀 One of nature’s richest sources of L-citrulline.
Dogs use citrulline to help support healthy circulation, heart health, and mobility. Canine studies have found this pathway is altered in certain heart diseases, highlighting its importance for cardiovascular health.

💧 🩺 Can help reduce bladder stone–forming crystals.
A small peer-reviewed canine study found that dogs given a watermelon extract beverage had fewer calcium oxalate and struvite urine crystals after 3 months. These crystals are the building blocks of many bladder stones.

🛡️ 🍅 Rich in lycopene.
Watermelon is one of the richest fruit sources of lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative damage.
👀 🥕 Packed with beta carotene:
This Vitamin A precursor supports healthy vision, skin, and immune function.

🍉 🤯 Here’s a fun fact:
The white rind (just beneath the green skin) actually contains more L-citrulline than the pink flesh. While most dogs won’t enjoy chewing the rind, it’s where much of this unique amino acid is naturally concentrated.

🐶 How much watermelon can dogs eat?

Watermelon should be an occasional treat. A good rule is to keep treats under 10% of your dog’s daily calories.

A practical serving guide:

🐾 Under 10 lb (4.5 kg): 1–2 small cubes
🐾 10–25 lb (4.5–11 kg): 2–4 cubes
🐾 25–50 lb (11–23 kg): ½–1 cup
🐾 Over 50 lb (23+ kg): 1–2 cups

✅ remove seeds and the tough green rind, which can be difficult to digest.

🦷 POMEGRANATE: A SURPRISING SUPERFRUIT FOR YOUR DOG’S MOUTH! 🍎

Did you know that about 80% of dogs over the age of 3 develop some degree of gum disease? Bad breath is often the first sign, but over time harmful mouth bacteria can lead to plaque, tartar, inflamed gums, tooth loss, and may even contribute to inflammation throughout the body.
That’s why the research on pomegranate is so exciting.

A peer-reviewed study found pomegranate reduced one of the main bacteria responsible for canine gum disease by nearly 40% while slowing the growth of other harmful bacteria linked to plaque, tartar, and bad breath. A second study in dogs found a pomegranate-containing water additive helped reduce plaque, tartar, bleeding gums, and gum inflammation compared with controls.

Beyond oral health, pomegranates are packed with powerful polyphenols that help protect cells from oxidative stress and support healthy inflammation. They also contain ellagitannins, which beneficial gut microbes convert into urolithin A—a compound being studied for its role in supporting healthy mitochondria, muscles, and healthy aging.

Healthy mouths start with a healthy microbiome. While brushing is still the gold standard, supporting both the oral and gut microbiome provide even greater benefits. That’s one reason why Dr. Karen Becker formulated Primitive Probiotics™ with clinically studied strains to help nourish beneficial bacteria from the inside out and support digestive, immune, and oral health.

🧠 GUT HEALTH & EPILEPSY: WHAT A NEW STUDY REVEALS

One of the largest peer-reviewed canine epilepsy microbiome studies to date found that dogs with epilepsy have elevated levels of Collinsella, a bacterium also linked to several neurological diseases in people.

Collinsella is associated with leaky gut, inflammation, altered bile acid metabolism, and lower production of butyrate—one of the gut’s most important anti-inflammatory compounds.

While this study didn’t test ways to lower Collinsella, the authors discuss several clues, and broader microbiome research points to two promising strategies:

🌾 Feed small amounts of fermentable fiber & resistant starch: cooked-and-cooled sweet potatoes, green bananas, legumes, oats, and other fermentable fibers help nourish beneficial bacteria while increasing butyrate production.

🦠 Support butyrate-producing bacteria.
Rather than targeting Collinsella directly, research suggests supporting butyrate-producing microbes can help restore a healthier microbiome.

That’s one reason Dr. Karen Becker formulated Primitive Probiotics™ differently. It combines canine-derived strains, soil-based probiotics, Saccharomyces boulardii, and L. plantarum LP815™ to help support gut barrier health, microbial diversity, and beneficial short-chain fatty acid production.

With growing evidence supporting the gut-brain axis, supporting a healthier microbiome may become an important part of a comprehensive approach to brain health.

🐶 Because a healthier gut can support a healthier brain. If you want to explore a science backed probiotic option for your dog, comment BETTERBELLY and we’ll DM you the link.

💔“𝐒𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐬 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫… 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐀𝐭 𝐇𝐞𝐫 𝐍𝐨𝐰” 💚

This is Frankie 🐾
9 years old… and quite possibly Dr. KK’s “unofficial miniature Border Collie” 😄

But behind that cute face—Frankie has been fighting a nasty cancer.

When she first came to us, things were tough.

After her first round of chemo, she developed severe diarrhoea…
Her body was struggling. Her energy was low.

So we supported her the TCVM way 🌿

✨ A tailored herbal formula to strengthen Spleen Qi
(think digestion, immunity, energy)

✨ Blood & Yin tonics to nourish and rebuild from within

And here’s what her mum and dad told us…

💬 “She’s so much happier.”

No more diarrhoea.
Brighter eyes.
More energy.

And today?

She’s back to politely demanding treats…
(just look at those front legs! 😆)

And yes… still smiling.

🌸 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐂𝐕𝐌 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭:

Not just fighting disease—but helping your fluffy feel like themselves again.

Because even in the middle of something as heavy as cancer…

✨ 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬
✨ 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬
✨ 𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬

Keep shining, Frankie 💛
Keep that tail wagging.

If your fluffy is going through cancer and you feel like there must be something more you can do…

There is.

Don’t get fooled by marketing !!! Food is food and Dogs don’t need “Dog Food” ….

Study: What you feed your dog can change their health in just 14 days.

Processing matters. Just like in humans, ultra-processed diets are linked to health concerns and similar patterns are being seen in dogs. How much a dog’s food is processed can affect digestion, nutrient absorption, gut bacteria, and overall metabolic and immune health.

A new peer-reviewed study found dogs eating a gently cooked diet (Lyka Pet Food) had better digestion, healthier gut bacteria, and smaller blood sugar spikes than dogs on kibble (Hill’s Pet Nutrition).

Lower spikes = less stress on the body and inflammation, supporting heart health, immune balance, and healthier aging.

SENIOR DOG CHECKLIST 🐾
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My simple guide to help keep your dog comfortable, happy, and supported in their golden years:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Regular Body Care
Book regular sessions with your soft tissue therapist to keep joints and muscles moving well, pick up issues early, and talk through any changes you’ve noticed.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Managing Pain & Stiffness
Aches and stiffness are common as dogs age. Therapies like Bowen, laser, and red light can help reduce pain and discomfort and support better movement.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Nutrition Matters
Older dogs have different needs. A diet with quality protein, joint support, and appropriate calories can make a big difference. (Happy to guide you on this.)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
A Comfortable Home
Make life easier for them:
• Soft, supportive bedding
• Raised food and water bowls on a non-slip mat
• Non-slip mats to prevent slipping on slippery floors
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Gentle Exercise
Keep them moving, but keep it kind:
• Short, regular walks
• Let them set the pace
This helps joints stay mobile and prevents weight gain
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Joint Support
Support aging joints with:
• Supplements like collagen, Vitamin C, green-lipped mussel, MSM, and omega oils
• Ramps or steps to help them get in and out of cars or onto furniture
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Healthy Weight
Extra weight puts stress on joints and organs. Keeping them at a healthy weight is one of the most important (and often overlooked) things you can do.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Regular Nail Trims
Long nails can affect how they walk and stand, adding unnecessary strain. Make nail trims a regular routine
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Quality Sleep
Give them a warm, quiet, and well-padded place to rest ~ orthopaedic beds can be a game changer.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Watch for Changes
Small changes matter. Keep an eye on:
• Appetite
• Energy levels
• Toileting habits
• Behaviour
These can be early signs that something isn’t right.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🐾🐾🐾
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Every senior dog is different, but a little extra care goes a long way.
Supporting them through this stage of life is one of the kindest things we can do for our dogs who’ve given us everything 🤍💟🤍
