🐾 Kennel cough (aka canine cough) is doing the rounds in Shepparton & Melbourne 🐾

Kennel cough can be caused by numerous different viruses and bacteria (including parainfluenza, adenovirus and Bordetella), leading to an upper respiratory infection. It spreads easily through coughing and sneezing, and from contact with contaminated surfaces. Signs usually appear 3–7 days after exposure.

💉 Vaccination helps:
The kennel cough vaccine protects against two common pathogens and reduces how sick dogs get. It doesn’t give 100% protection, as there are multiple pathogens that can cause kennel cough, but vaccinated dogs usually have milder symptoms and recover faster.

🐶 Common signs:
• A dry, harsh honking or hacking cough - sounds like something is stuck and they’re trying to clear their throat
• Coughing worse with excitement or exercise
• Gagging or retching after coughing (white frothy foam)
• Runny nose or sneezing
• Lethargy
• Reduced appetite

🚨 See a vet promptly if you notice:
• Thick yellow/green discharge
• Trouble breathing
• High fever
• Not eating or vomiting up their food
• Cough lasting more than 7 - 10 days
• Symptoms in puppies, senior dogs, dogs with chronic illnesses, or on immunosuppressing medications

As coughing can be due to many different disease processes, you should consult a veterinarian to rule these out.

If your dog has kennel cough:
• Don’t panic! Most cases are mild and resolve on their own within a few days, but some dogs may need treatment to manage their symptoms and prevent complications
• Keep them away from other dogs
• Avoid parks, daycare and grooming while symptoms are present
• Encourage rest and minimise excitement
• Wash hands after handling them
• Avoid face licking
• Wash bedding and toys in hot water and dry in the sun
• Clean food and water bowls daily with hot soapy water
• Keep them away from immunocompromised people if possible. Bordetella bronchiseptica (one of the pathogens we vaccinate with the kennel cough vaccine), can very rarely cause infection in immunocompromised people

If you’re concerned about your dog, feel free to reach out - we’re always happy to help 💙

☀️HOT DAYS AHEAD☀️ - KEEP YOUR DOGGO SAFE!

With the weather heating up, here are a few must-know tips to help your best mate/s stay cool and healthy:

🔥 1. Paw protection
If the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws! Walk early morning or late evening to avoid pad burns.

🚗 2. Never leave pets in cars
Even with windows cracked, temperatures skyrocket fast - just a few minutes can be life-threatening.

💧 3. Hydration is key
Keep fresh water available at all times. Pop a few ice cubes in their bowl for a cool treat!

🐶 4. Watch for heatstroke
Signs include excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and collapse. If you’re worried, call your vet immediately.

☀️ 5. Sunscreen for pale pups
Dogs with pink noses or light coats can get sunburnt. Use pet-safe sunscreen on exposed areas (e.g. nose, belly, ears).

🏊‍♂️ 6. Swimming safety
Supervise around pools, beaches & rivers. Rinse off salt or chlorine after a swim to avoid skin irritation.

🍦 7. Cool treats
Try frozen watermelon (seedless) or frozen broth cubes for a cooling treat.

🎄🐾 Christmas Treats ≠ Pet Treats! 🐾🎄

The festive season is here, which means full plates, sneaky snacks, and those very convincing puppy-dog eyes!

A friendly reminder to keep Christmas goodies off your pet’s menu, even if they insist they’ve been very good this year!

🚫 Foods to avoid sharing:
- Chocolate & sweets/lollies
- Artificial sweeteners
- Cooked bones and marrow bones
- Preserved meats
- Fatty meats, skin, stuffing, and leftovers
- Onions & garlic
- Grapes and raisins (e.g. mince pies)
- Macadamia nuts

✅ Pet-safe options instead:
- Their regular food
- Vet-approved treats
- A special pet treat so they don’t feel left out

Let’s keep the holiday period relaxing and emergency-vet-free. If in doubt, don’t share it. Your pet will forgive you…eventually 😉🐶🐱
