🥰🥰THANK YOU🥰🥰

It has been just over 4 weeks since we officially opened Valley Equine Vet Services and what a busy month it has been. Georgia and I are incredibly grateful for all the support that we have received from everyone.
We'd like to thank you not just for trusting us with your horses but for all the kind words and messages you have sent us.

To all former clients of Yarra Ranges Animal Hospital, thank you for your ongoing support. And to all the new clients and horses we have now met, welcome!

We are always open to feedback from our clients, so if you have any recommendations on how we can continue to improve our service we would love to hear from you.

Don't hesitate to reach out to us, even if it's just to say hello.

- Yang & Georgia

🌾🌾Equine Metabolic Syndrome Testing🌾🌾
With the recent weather, we've seen a few horses present with persistent laminitis that have not responded well to conservative management. We have diagnosed some of these horses with Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS).

EMS is an umbrella term that includes several different features, but the most important and consistent one is insulin dysregulation (ID).
Horses with EMS/ID have high levels of insulin in their blood due to either excessive secretion of insulin or a resistance to insulin. This results in a higher risk of developing laminitis.

Clinical signs of EMS/ID include
- a cresty neck
- regional adiposity (i.e. fat lumps)
- recurrent laminitis
- divergent hoof rings

It is important to note that horses with EMS/ID are NOT ALWAYS OBESE.
Certain breeds are more susceptible including ponies, Arabians and Warmbloods.

The current recommendation for testing EMS/ID is with a dynamic oral sugar test. The horse is fasted overnight and Karo corn syrup is administered orally in the morning. Blood samples are taken at 0 minutes, 60 minutes and/or 90 minutes. If the insulin levels at the 60 and/or 90 minute samples are excessively high, then a diagnosis of EMS/ID is confirmed.

There are a variety of management and medical options we can then employ to address EMS/ID both in the short and long term to ensure the best outcome.

If you suspect your horse has EMS and would like more information on the testing process, feel free to contact us on 0490 490 811.

🚑🩺24/7 AFTER HOURS SERVICES🚑🩺
In the week since we opened, we have already had several after hours calls for various issues such as choke and colic.
As horse owners ourselves, we know how stressful it can be when they fall ill or injure themselves after hours and on the weekend.

Whilst we are no strangers to late night calls and interrupted dinners, below are some tips that will help us help you in these situations.
- avoid giving any medications without first discussing with the vet as it can impact what we can administer once we arrive.
- record your horse's temperature but ONLY if it is safe to do so.
- if available, have a clean, dry well-lit area prepared.
- have your float hooked up to your car so that if referral to a hospital is required, you can load and go. If you do not own a float, contact someone you know who might be able to help you.
- if we don't pick up the phone straight away, it's likely because we are attending to another patient. We will call you back as soon as we can.

Whether you are a current or new client, we want you to know that Valley Equine Vet Services are here to help. If you find yourself needing an equine vet after hours, all you have to do is pick up the phone and call us on 0490 490 811.

🦷🪥 DENTAL SERVICES🪥🦷
At Valley Equine Vet Services, we are passionate about teeth!
Whether your horse is young or old, it is important to ensure their oral health is optimal. Dental issues can present in a variety of ways including...
- poor performance
- weight loss
- discomfort/resistance when ridden
- dropping feed/quidding
- choke
- headshaking
- bad breath/halitosis
- facial swellings/discharge

All dentals performed by Valley Equine Vet Services, are done so under sedation. This allows us to examine all aspects of the mouth in detail and to address any issues accordingly. We are also able to further characterise any abnormalities with x-rays of the head and teeth if required.

Included in all dentals is a general physical exam, sheath cleaning (for the males) and a digital dental chart is provided for your records.

With many horses on break over the colder months, now is the perfect time to book a dental appointment in preparation for the competition season ahead. We offer discounted rates for multiple dentals as well as split travel between owners.

For any queries or bookings, please give us a call on 0490 490 811

Wow, what an interesting start to our first day!
A solid team effort from everyone and we're glad to report the horse is doing well.

How fortunate we are to have such a specialised team in the area to assist owners and horses in scary situations like this.

This isn't the first time we've had to work alongside the large animal recovery team, and they have turned up at all hours of the day and night to assist.

Thank you to all the CFA members who came out to help! Macclesfield Fire Brigade (CFA)
