A little behind the scenes at Allambie Vet 💙

Tazzy, a beautiful Kelpie, recently needed surgery to remove a foreign body. His surgery began before we closed for the day and continued well into the evening.

Dr Liam and Dr Louise stayed to complete his surgery, with Erin, Alex and Britt there alongside them caring for Tazzy throughout.

There are so many moments in veterinary medicine that happen after the waiting room is empty, the phones have stopped ringing and the doors are locked for the night.

We share lots of stories about our patients, but sometimes the people behind their care deserve a little recognition too.

Our team gives so much to their patients every day, often in ways that happen quietly behind the scenes and that our clients may never see.

So, a little thank you to our team for taking such good care of Tazzy. We’re very lucky to have you. 💙

And Tazzy, we hope you’re feeling much better and staying away from anything you shouldn’t be eating 🐾

Does your dog sound like Ted? 🔊🐶

We’re currently seeing an increase in dogs presenting with kennel cough at Allambie Vet.

Despite the name, dogs don’t need to have stayed in a kennel to catch it. It can spread anywhere dogs socialise — including dog parks, off-leash areas, beaches, daycare and groomers.

The classic sign is a sudden dry, hacking or “honking” cough, sometimes followed by gagging or retching. It can sound like your dog has something stuck in their throat.

If your dog starts coughing, keep them away from other dogs and give us a call for advice.

We’ve also put together a new guide covering what kennel cough sounds like, why vaccinated dogs can still catch it, how long to isolate your dog and when they need to see a vet.

A tiny toy... but a very big problem.

Most people know dogs love eating things they shouldn’t... but did you know kittens can be just as mischievous? 🐱🧶

This sweet little guy is Milo. After vomiting up part of one of his favourite toys, his family realised something wasn’t right—the rest of the toy was missing.

Trusting their instincts, they brought Milo straight to Allambie Vet.

After examining Milo, Dr Alex was concerned there was more to the story than the piece of toy he had vomited up. With her experience diagnosing intestinal foreign bodies, she recommended further investigation. Using our in-house ultrasound, she quickly identified a linear foreign body lodged in Milo’s small intestine. It was clear Milo needed surgery.

That’s where the strength of working as a team came into play.

Dr Linda carefully removed the obstruction before it could cause further damage to Milo’s intestines, while our experienced veterinary nurses monitored his anaesthetic, supported every stage of surgery, and ensured he remained safe and comfortable throughout the procedure.

After surgery, our nurses continued to care for Milo around the clock, keeping him comfortable with pain relief, monitoring his recovery, and, of course, giving him plenty of cuddles and TLC.

❤️ The best part?

Milo made a fantastic recovery and was soon back home with his family, back to doing all the important kitten things... just with a few less string toys!

Milo’s story is also a reminder to trust your instincts. You know your pet better than anyone. If something doesn’t seem right, even if you can’t quite put your finger on it. It’s always worth having them checked. Acting early can make all the difference. ✨

🎉 42 Years of Allambie Vet 🎉

42 years ago, Brian and Elaine Mills opened a small veterinary hospital on the Northern Beaches with one simple belief: treating every pet as part of the family.

Since 1984, one thing has never changed:

For 42 years, we have shared in the joy of bringing home new puppies and kittens, celebrated milestones with families, and helped guide owners through some of life’s hardest goodbyes.

We have watched children grow up and return with pets of their own. We’ve cared for generations of pets and built friendships with families who have trusted us for decades.

While the hospital has grown and veterinary medicine has changed enormously over the years, the reason we come to work every day remains the same: caring for the pets entrusted to us and supporting the people who love them.

As a proudly family-owned veterinary hospital, we are incredibly grateful to the Northern Beaches community for allowing us to be part of your pets’ lives for the past 42 years.

🌏🐾 Making a Difference Around the World 🐾🌏

We are incredibly proud of one of our Senior Veterinary Nurses, Alex, who recently travelled to Koh Samui, Thailand to volunteer with the registered charity Rob’s Dogs. Working alongside a dedicated team of 6 veterinarians and 4 veterinary nurses, Alex helped desex an incredible 417 cats and dogs in just three days.

These desexing programs play a vital role in reducing the number of unwanted litters, improving the welfare of street animals, supporting local communities, protecting native wildlife, and creating lasting positive change for both animals and people. This is not Alex’s first volunteer mission. Through her work with World Vets, she has also participated in:

📍 Siem Reap, Cambodia (2025) – 542 desexings
📍 Antigua, Guatemala (2024) – 492 desexings
📍 Vientiane, Laos (2024) – 470 desexings

Alex is passionate about using her veterinary nursing skills to help communities where access to veterinary care is limited due to financial hardship or geographic challenges. These projects are often conducted in makeshift facilities, ranging from empty buildings to local temples, with teams bringing much of their own equipment, medications and supplies through donations from veterinary clinics around Australia.
What makes these achievements even more remarkable is that every volunteer self-funds their participation, including flights, accommodation and travel expenses, simply because they believe in making a difference.
Later this year, Alex will once again volunteer her time and skills in Indonesia, continuing her commitment to improving the lives of animals and the communities that care for them.

Alex, thank you for giving so generously of your time and talents to help animals and communities in need. Your compassion, dedication and commitment to animal welfare are truly inspiring. We are incredibly proud to have you as part of the Allambie Vet family and of the difference you are making around the world. ❤️💛💚

Say hello to Dr Liam and yes, that adorable cavoodle approves. 💙

We are so proud to introduce the newest member of the Allambie Vet family. Dr Liam brings something truly special to our team and to every single patient who walks through our doors.

Growing up on a working sheep, cattle and cropping farm in rural NSW, Liam didn’t choose to love animals. He just always did. After graduating, he spent four years as an experienced veterinarian in a busy regional practice — treating everything from horses and alpacas to complex small animal surgical cases. It was there he discovered a deep passion for small animal medicine and surgery that has never left him.

Now he calls the Northern Beaches home. And we’re so glad he does.

What you’ll notice about Dr Liam from the moment you meet him is how genuinely he cares. He understands that your pet is family and he treats every patient like they’re his own. He has a particular soft spot for older patients and brings a calm, thorough and compassionate approach to every consultation.

Oh — and he has a one-kidneyed rescue Kelpie named Bullseye at home. Safe to say, he walks the talk. 🐕
