🚨 FOOD & KITCHEN SAFETY FOR PETS 🚨
We recently saw a tragic case involving a dog that had swallowed a kebab skewer.
The skewer had perforated the stomach and migrated through the liver, diaphragm, and into the heart. Based on our findings, this injury appeared to have occurred months earlier, and the dog had shown very few obvious signs of discomfort during that time. While remarkable, the outcome was ultimately devastating.
This case serves as an important reminder of the risks that seemingly harmless household items can pose to our pets.
Many dogs are opportunistic scavengers and will investigate anything that smells interesting. Unfortunately, this can include discarded food, rubbish, bones, skewers, plastic, and even toxic substances found during walks.
🐾 To help keep your dog safe:
• Teach and regularly practise a reliable "drop it" or "leave it" command.
• If your dog has a habit of picking up and eating random objects, consider using a basket muzzle during off-lead walks.
• Keep household bins securely closed and out of reach, ideally inside a cupboard or drawer.
• Dispose of potentially dangerous items such as kebab skewers, bones, plastic packaging, and food scraps directly into a secure outdoor wheelie bin.
Pets can sometimes hide signs of illness or injury surprisingly well, making prevention especially important.
If you suspect your pet has swallowed something they shouldn't have, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Early intervention can be lifesaving.
❤️ We share this case not to alarm pet owners, but to raise awareness and help prevent similar tragedies from occurring.
