🐾 A beautiful giant-breed puppy in for a biomechanical check! 🐾

It was such a pleasure checking over this gorgeous boy today.

Giant-breed puppies have a lot of growing to do, and while they are often full of energy, their bones, joints, ligaments and growth plates are still developing.

A commonly used rough guide is around 5 minutes of controlled exercise per month of age, once or twice a day — so a 4-month-old puppy might have around 20 minutes of gentle walking at a time.

For giant breeds, we recommend to focus on short, controlled walks rather than long walks, with plenty of free play and rest. And importantly, jumping, repetitive stairs, hard running and high-impact activities should be avoided while they are growing.

It can be difficult when you have an energetic puppy who thinks they can do everything! But allowing them to grow slowly and develop strong, healthy biomechanics is one of the best things we can do for their future joint health.

Luckily, this puppy's owner is very keen to do everything right, so I'm confident this gorgeous youngster is well on the way to becoming a healthy, happy adult dog. 🐶❤️

Slow and steady really does matter with giant breeds!

🐾 That full-body shake your dog does isn’t always because they’re wet? 🐾

We’ve all seen it — your dog stands up after a nap, has a big shake from nose to tail, and then carries on with their day. 🐕💨

Dogs will often perform a full-body shake after resting, stretching, playing or experiencing excitement or stress.

That rapid movement involves the whole body, with motion travelling from the head and neck right down through the spine — making it a surprisingly impressive coordinated movement!
As animal chiropractors, little everyday behaviours like shaking, stretching, scratching and getting up from rest can actually be useful things to ask owners about.

For example, if a dog that normally has a big, easy shake suddenly stops partway through, avoids shaking altogether, or consistently shakes only part of their body, it may be worth paying a little more attention to how comfortably they’re moving.

Sometimes the small things our dogs do every day can tell us quite a lot! 🐾❤️

🐾 Maintenance care isn’t just for older dogs!🐾

It’s easy to think about chiropractic care once our dogs start slowing down, becoming stiff or developing age-related changes — but younger dogs can benefit from regular musculoskeletal check-ups too. 🐕💛

Running, jumping, playing, slipping, wrestling with their friends (and occasionally making some questionable decisions at full speed 😂) all place demands on a dog’s body.

Regular maintenance visits give us an opportunity to assess how your dog is moving, including their spinal and joint mobility, muscle tone, posture and gait, and address areas of restriction or tension when appropriate.

For our younger dogs, the focus is on supporting comfortable movement and function through all the adventures they get up to.

For our older dogs, maintenance care may become even more valuable as we work alongside their veterinary care to help manage age-related changes such as arthritis, stiffness and reduced mobility.

And importantly, we don’t believe there’s a one-size-fits-all schedule. How often a dog benefits from being checked depends on their age, activity level, health, previous injuries and individual needs.

Because sometimes the best time to think about how your dog is moving is before you notice them struggling. 🐾❤️

🐕 Stiff, sore or slowing down? Laser therapy may help🐕

As our dogs and cats get older, it’s common to notice changes like taking a little longer to get up, becoming hesitant to jump onto the couch, slowing down on walks, or seeming stiffer after resting.

Conditions such as osteoarthritis and other age-related musculoskeletal changes can contribute to pain, stiffness and reduced mobility — and this is where we may incorporate our Erchonia EVRL laser as part of a broader management plan. 🐕🐈

The EVRL is a low-level laser therapy device that uses specific wavelengths of light to influence cellular processes. In our senior patients, laser therapy may be used alongside chiropractic care, veterinary management and appropriate exercise or rehabilitation to help with:
🐾 Pain management
🐾 Inflammation
🐾 Joint and soft-tissue comfort
🐾 Mobility and function
🐾 Maintaining quality of life

One of the things we love about laser therapy for our older patients is that it's gentle and non-invasive — there's no need for our arthritic seniors to be placed in uncomfortable positions during treatment.

Our goal isn't to make an old dog or cat young again (although we're sure they'd vote for that! 😂). It's to help them stay comfortable, mobile and enjoying the things they love for as long as possible.

🐾 Meet Jasper — a very important working boy! 💙

Jasper is a service dog who regularly visits us for maintenance chiropractic care.

Service dogs like Jasper have an incredibly important job, and their bodies can be exposed to the same repetitive physical demands day after day — lots of walking, standing, sitting, getting in and out of cars, navigating different surfaces and staying alongside their handler.

Jasper’s maintenance visits are all about checking how his body is moving and functioning, identifying areas of joint restriction or muscular tension, and helping keep him comfortable and moving well so he can continue doing the job he loves. 🐕‍🦺

And, as you can probably tell, Jasper takes his chiropractic appointments very seriously. 😉❤️
We absolutely love having this handsome boy visit us!

🦴 “My dog has spondylosis… what does that actually mean?”🦴

Spondylosis deformans is a condition where new bone forms along the edges of the vertebrae, sometimes eventually creating a bony bridge between neighbouring vertebrae.

It can look pretty dramatic on an X-ray — but an important thing to remember is that an X-ray finding doesn't always tell us how a dog feels or functions.

Some dogs with significant spondylosis may show very few clinical signs, while others may have stiffness, reduced spinal mobility or discomfort alongside other musculoskeletal changes.

That’s why when we assess these dogs, we don't just focus on the area that looks different on the X-ray. We look at the whole dog — their posture, gait, spinal and joint movement, muscle tone and how they're compensating elsewhere.

Chiropractic care doesn't remove those bony changes. Instead, where appropriate and alongside veterinary care, the aim is to help maintain comfortable movement and function in the areas of the body that can move well. 🐕❤️

Because sometimes the goal isn't to change the X-ray — it's to help the dog move as comfortably as possible.

🐕🐾Always learning, always improving! 🐾🐴

Last week, our animal chiropractors Alice and Minty attended an Animal Biomechanical Medicine (ABM) workshop in Melbourne, spending the week building on their skills and knowledge in caring for both horses and dogs.

The workshop included hands-on training in adjusting techniques, soft tissue techniques and rehabilitation, with plenty of four-legged volunteers along the way — including horses, dogs… and even a lamb! 🐑❤️

Continuing education is such an important part of what we do, helping us refine our techniques, expand our knowledge and provide the best possible care for the animals we see.

We’re excited to bring everything we learnt back into the clinic! 🐶🐴

🐕 DID YOU KNOW? YOUR DOG, YOU AND A GIRAFFE ALL HAVE THE SAME NUMBER OF BONES IN YOUR NECK! 🤯

Despite the enormous difference in neck length, dogs, humans and giraffes all typically have seven cervical (neck) vertebrae.

So how can a giraffe have such a long neck while your dogs is so much shorter?

It’s not about having more vertebrae — it’s largely about differences in their size, shape and proportions. In giraffes, each cervical vertebra is dramatically elongated compared with those of dogs and humans. 🦒

In dogs, these seven cervical vertebrae form a highly mobile region of the spine that allows them to turn, bend, raise and lower their head as they interact with their environment.

And because the head and neck don't work in isolation, neck movement is closely integrated with the shoulders, forelimbs and the rest of the spine during everyday movement. 🐾

Pretty impressive what just seven little vertebrae can do!

🐾 Meet Florence ❤️

Florence is a beautiful rescue Dachshund who had an incredibly difficult start to life.

She was used as a breeding dog and spent much of her early life permanently confined to a tiny cage. Because she had so little space to move, she was unable to walk normally and eventually required surgery on her legs to straighten them and give her the chance to walk.

Thankfully, Florence’s life changed when she was adopted by a wonderful family who have given her the love, care and freedom she deserves. ❤️

Part of Florence’s ongoing care includes Animal Chiropractic, helping to keep her spine, pelvis and musculoskeletal system functioning as well as possible, given everything her body has been through.

Florence may have had a heartbreaking beginning, but she is now surrounded by people who love her and are committed to giving her the best quality of life possible. 🥰

She is a wonderful reminder of just how resilient our animals can be — and how much a second chance can mean. 🐾❤️

🔴 NEW AT SAMFORD CHIROPRACTIC 🟣

We’re excited to introduce the Erchonia EVRL Laser to Samford Chiropractic — an innovative low-level laser system combining red and violet wavelengths.

Low-level laser therapy, also known as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of light to influence cellular processes within the body.

🔴 Red light penetrates into tissues and is used to support cellular activity, circulation, tissue repair and recovery.

🟣 Violet light has different properties and provides an additional wavelength that can be used alongside red light as part of the EVRL system.

Together, these wavelengths give us another non-invasive therapeutic tool that can complement chiropractic care and rehabilitation, particularly when managing musculoskeletal conditions, soft-tissue injuries and recovery.

After more than 40 years of providing chiropractic care in Samford, we remain committed to continuing our education and incorporating new technologies where they may add value to the care we provide.

We’re looking forward to introducing the EVRL Laser into the clinic and exploring how it can best support our patients.

Curious about whether low-level laser therapy could complement your care? Ask us at your next appointment.
