"I just found a rotten egg in my incubator — will it ruin the rest?"
This one came up on a backyard chicken forum this week and it's worth knowing the answer before it happens to you.
A rotten egg in the incubator isn't just smelly — it's a real risk. The shell can crack or even burst from gas pressure, spraying bacteria across every other egg in the chamber.
Here's what to do:
• Remove the suspect egg immediately, very gently, into a sealed bag
• Wipe down the incubator floor only — avoid the eggs themselves
• Don't open the incubator any longer than you have to, especially after day 14
• If others look discoloured or feel unusually heavy, candle them at your next chance
The best defence is candling between days 7–10 and again around day 14 so a dead embryo gets caught before it turns.
Got an egg you're not sure about? Send us a candling photo and we'll help you decide.
