Protection training isn’t just teaching a dog when to act. It’s teaching them when to stop.

Apollo can be friendly, engage when commanded, release when commanded, sit — and return straight back to being friendly with the same person.

That control is just as important as the protection itself.

A protection dog shouldn’t make their own decisions about when the job starts and ends. They should understand the command, commit when required, and switch off when told.

That’s the standard we train for.

You can train the exercise over and over — eventually, you have to change the picture.

Different environment. Different situation. No familiar routine telling the dog exactly what’s coming next.

For this session, we built a scenario around something completely ordinary: walking with the pram. Then we let the situation unfold.

This is where protection training becomes really interesting. We’re not just looking for a dog that will engage — we’re looking at confidence, stability, control and how they respond when the picture isn’t the one they’ve rehearsed 100 times before.

Safe, controlled scenario. Very real job for the dog.

And she understood the assignment. Not your average walk with the pram 😅

Putting all that training to the test.

Would your dog step up?

Meet Shadow 🐺

Three sessions into his protection training and we’re starting to see him understand what’s being asked of him.

What we really like about Shadow is who he is outside of the work. He’s a very playful, happy and stable German Shepherd — which is important when the end goal is a dog that will live as part of a family, not just perform a job.

Protection work isn’t about changing that temperament. With the right dog, we’re developing what’s already there and teaching him to use it with direction and control.

At this stage we’re not interested in rushing him or seeing how much we can get out of him. We want him confident, enjoying the work and understanding it properly.

Session three with Shadow — plenty more learning ahead for both dog and family.

Different language. Same standards. 🛡️🐕

Apollo works in Macedonian cues teaching clear communication, consistency and timing.

Protection isn’t about creating aggression. It’s about building control.

This isn’t a Belgian Malinois problem—it’s an ownership problem.

Powerful working breeds require the right lifestyle, training and handling. The issue here isn’t that this is a “bad dog.” It’s that the owner has lost control when control matters most.

Do you agree, or do you see it differently? 👇

Meet Beans 🐾🍻 The four-legged face of Thirstville in Marrickville.

As the resident mascot of a dog-friendly bar and bottle shop, Beans has a pretty important job. With new people, dogs and plenty of activity coming through the venue, owners Todd and Imogen wanted him to be able to stay calm, confident and well behaved — even when things get busy.

We worked with Beans on his reactivity, obedience and ability to settle around distractions, helping him become the example for the other dogs coming through the doors.

Because being dog-friendly isn’t just about allowing dogs in — it’s about creating an environment where dogs and people can actually relax and enjoy being there.

Beans has come a long way, and we’re proud to see him stepping into his role as the ultimate venue mascot. 🐕🍺

🎙️ Voice-over: Today we’re working with Kion on pram protection as part of his family protection training.

Sessions like this are about building confidence, control, and reliable responses around real-life situations. As professional dog trainers, we focus on consistency, clear communication, and repetition—because that’s how lasting results are achieved.
