Obstacle Preference vs Obstacle Discrimination. What is it and why does it matter?

In Agility, running the course can be really fast and this requires quick decision making not only for us, but also for our dogs! If dog runs and there is a tunnel standing in front of him on its left side and jump on the right side, dog has to make a quick decision on which one to take. 🐩

That’s where the OBSTACLE DISCRIMINATION skill comes — Dog’s ability to choose the correct obstacle! 🌟

But sometimes, dog chooses one obstacle over the other what we call OBSTACLE PREFERENCE — they see the tunnel and jump and they pick to fly over the jump even it might not be the right option. (No dogs like tunnel! Anyone? 🤠)

Teaching your dog an obstacle discrimination will help them to think, before they leap. Start by rewarding only correct choices. This will help them to build confidence in your cues.

Patience in dog training

I remember times when my dogs couldn’t perform exercise or behaviours I’ve desired from them. Me trying to push dogs or me over the limits never worked. But I also remember sessions when I allowed myself and my pup more time to learn things while having more fun. That was time I like to remember! 🙌

The key of being patient is that training allows our dogs to grow on their own pace. It reduces their and our frustration! 🔐

So, when planning to train, allow more time to develop certain skills.

Don’t try to teach your dog too much at once. Keep session short and sweet. 💛

Set expectations and make sure that your puppy is capable of doing what you ask for.

And finally, model patience to your dog. 🐕

Training can be effective and fun with the right approach and gradual improvement! 🏆
