A quick update from Clever Canid
If I am a little slower to respond to messages, emails, or booking requests over the next few weeks, I wanted to share why.
My assistance dog and partner of almost 8 years was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma, an aggressive form of bone cancer. She has spent the last eight years taking care of me every single day, and now it is my turn to devote my time, energy, and love entirely back to her.
We are officially working through her ultimate bucket list to make sure every day is filled with pure joy. First up this weekend is a relaxing snifari in Wombat State Forest, along with plenty of extra yummy ice cream treats to pair with her absolute favorites: KFC and lamb kebabs.
I am still taking care of client needs, but please allow a bit of extra time for replies while I focus on making these memories with my girl. Thank you all so much for your understanding, patience, and support.
If you have any favorite gentle dog-friendly bucket list ideas, feel free to leave them in the comments. 🐾❤️

The Ultimate “Grandparent” Takeover
Ah, the plot thickens! It’s actually Bobby’s turf, which means Grandpa is the visiting dignitary (and the secret source of all things delicious). Since it’s his mom’s house, the “spoiling” is even more covert—like a high-stakes mission where the objective is to give out treats without the kitchen floor telling on you.
The Home-Court Advantage
Bobby at home is a 50kg king in his castle. He knows exactly where the “good” snacks are kept, and he’s spent the day showing Grandpa all the best spots for a nap.
• The Power Dynamic: Bobby thinks he’s the host; Grandpa knows he’s the caterer.
• The Mission: Execute a “training session” that looks productive on paper but feels like a party in practice.
Why “Grandparenting” in Someone Else’s House is Better
There’s a special kind of joy in being the guest who breaks the rules. While Bobby’s mom usually insists on a strict “one treat per trick” ratio, Grandpa’s math is a little more... generous. The Grandparent’s Law of Physics:
At Mom’s house, gravity is strong. At Grandpa’s visit, treats somehow “fall” toward the 50kg dog at a much higher velocity. Today’s Summary
• Location: Bobby’s HQ.
• Activity: “Training” (officially), “Buffet” (according to Bobby).
• The Vibe: Pure, unadulterated love with a side of mischievous spoiling.
By the time Mom gets back, she’ll have a very tired, very happy, and very well-fed Boerboel who is wondering why Grandpa can’t just move in permanently.
How is the “training” actually going—has he managed to convince you that “laying down” deserves a three-course meal yet? 🐾

Ready for some Nose Work 😍

“A deep dive into the psychology of ‘The Good Stuff’ 🍳🐕 Today’s session was a masterclass in uncovering hidden triggers. What looked like random aggression was actually a textbook case of barrier frustration and resource guarding linked to the kitchen routine.
When a dog associates a specific room or sound (like the fridge opening or eggs cracking) with a high-value reward, the inability to get to that reward creates a ‘pressure cooker’ of emotion. By changing the picture—moving the reward and varying the timing—we take the power away from the trigger and give control back to the handler. It’s not just about training the dog; it’s about rebuilding the handler’s confidence to lead with a happy heart (and a happy voice! 🗣️✨).

The Power of the Nose 👃✨
Ever wonder why your dog is more exhausted after 15 minutes of sniffing than a hour-long walk? Welcome to the world of K9 Nose Work.
It’s more than just finding a hidden scent; it’s about solving odour puzzles. When a dog navigates air currents and environmental obstacles to pinpoint a target, they are using the most advanced part of their brain.
Why we love it:
• Mental Fatigue: It creates a deep, “quiet” tired that physical exercise just can’t match.
• Confidence Booster: Solving puzzles independently teaches dogs that they can handle challenges on their own.
• Environmental Mastery: Because the dog is so focused on their “job,” the scary world (noises, strangers, new places) fades into the background.
A dog that knows how to hunt is a dog that feels empowered, focused, and—most importantly—calm. 🐾

Athena’s got some serious game when she starts sketching doggos! Like or comment if you’d want her to sketch your dog! As most artists I think she needs to know how much people love seeing their dog drawn by a passionate artist!

Andrea the JRT was a total pro this morning, taking on the challenge of Birch ground hides at Aintree Reserve. There’s nothing quite like watching a dog’s brain work in real-time! 🧠✨
The highlight? That odour obedience. 🏆 After nailing the scent, his commitment was so strong he was reversing back to the hide to make sure he didn’t miss a single molecule.
