Enough is enough. How many more Greyhounds need to suffer or die before we decide we have seen enough?
The events of the past week have been heartbreaking.
We have read deeply disturbing evidence given to Tasmania’s parliamentary inquiry about Nitro Grace, a seven-year-old former racing Greyhound who died during emergency surgery after arriving severely underweight and suffering significant health issues.
Then, just days later, two-year-old Paw Otis suffered a fractured leg and was euthanised following a “We Stand With Tasmania” race at Sandown.
Tasmania has committed to ending Greyhound racing by 30 June 2029. The legislation needed to provide a framework for that transition has passed the House of Assembly but remains before the Legislative Council.
Dogs’ Homes has consistently supported an orderly, properly planned transition that supports the people affected by this change and protects the welfare of the Greyhounds.
But with every delay, we lose more of the time available to do that properly.
Hundreds of Greyhounds will eventually need to transition out of the industry. They cannot all simply be rehomed at once. Responsible rehoming takes time, resources, veterinary and behavioural support, foster and kennel capacity and, most importantly, suitable homes.
As one of the organisations likely to be called upon to help, this is a very real concern for Dogs’ Homes.
Our CEO Mark Wild is calling on Parliament to progress the legislation and give Tasmania the time and framework needed to properly plan for what comes next.
“I respectfully ask every Member of Parliament who remains undecided: if what we already know is not enough, what will it take?”
The phase-out is coming. Tasmania needs a plan — and the dogs cannot afford further delay.
