Ever wondered why your dog does the things they do? 🐾

This week’s breed: Akita

🐶 Origin
The Akita originated in the mountainous regions of northern Japan and has a history stretching back centuries. These powerful dogs were developed to cope with harsh conditions and were traditionally used for hunting large game. Over time, they also became valued as loyal guardians and companions.

🧠 Why were they bred?
Akitas were bred to be strong, courageous and independent. Historically, they helped hunters pursue animals such as wild boar and deer, requiring them to be confident and capable of making decisions without constant direction. Their protective nature also made them effective guardians of their homes and families.

🏃‍♂️ What does this mean at home?
Akitas are known for being loyal and deeply bonded to their families, but they're often naturally reserved around unfamiliar people. They're intelligent and independent thinkers, so you may occasionally get an “I heard you, I'm just considering my options” response to a command! 😅

Their hunting and guarding heritage means early socialisation and consistent, positive training are particularly important. Akitas can also have a strong prey drive and may be selective in their interactions with other dogs, so safe and appropriate introductions are essential.

🎾 Best ways to enrich them:
• Daily walks with plenty of opportunities to sniff
• Scent work and tracking games
• Puzzle feeders and problem-solving activities
• Short, positive training sessions
• Safe opportunities to explore different environments
• Activities that encourage independent thinking
• Plenty of calm quality time with their family

Akitas are powerful, intelligent dogs with an impressive working history. They might not demand attention every second of the day, but the bonds they form with their people can be incredibly strong. 🐾

Sometimes, making a difference comes down to changing the way we do the everyday things behind the scenes!

Did you know that at our Springfield and Redbank Plains hospitals, we make our own distilled water? 💧

Distilled water is used in a number of machines and processes throughout our hospitals. By producing it ourselves, we’ve reduced the need to regularly order large plastic containers of distilled water - helping us cut down on single-use plastic waste across our hospitals. ♻️

Throughout ZerOctober, alongside Australian Veterinary Environmental Alliance, we’re sharing some of the practical changes our Climate Care Team has introduced to help reduce our environmental footprint while continuing to provide high-quality care for our patients. 🐾

🚨 40 CASES OF TICK PARALYSIS! 🚨

Last week, our team treated our 40th case of tick paralysis! Yes, you read that correctly… 40! 😱

Here in Southeast Queensland, our warm and humid climate creates the perfect environment for paralysis ticks to thrive. And the scary part? These tiny parasites can be as small as a pinhead, making them incredibly difficult to spot!

The good news? Tick paralysis is preventable!

We're offering $50 OFF the yearly flea & tick injection for dogs until December 31st. That's 12 months of protection from just one injection, meaning one less thing for you to worry about!

Booking is easy! Simply visit our website to book online or give our friendly team a call:

🧡 Redbank Plains: 3492 9222

Please don't wait until your pet becomes another statistic. Prevention is always better than treatment. 🐾

Sustainability doesn’t stop when we leave the hospital - it can make its way into our kitchens too!

Our Climate Care Coordinator, Sandra, regularly hosts cooking classes for our team, sharing simple and practical ways we can make more sustainable choices when preparing meals at home. Our latest class was all about vegan cooking, with the team learning how to make a delicious potato curry accompanied by homemade bread.

Throughout ZerOctober, alongside Australian Veterinary Environmental Alliance, we’re celebrating the different ways our Climate Care Team is helping us think a little greener - both inside and outside our hospitals. 🌿🐾

Sometimes great patient care means getting down on their level… literally!

When Millie needed an IV catheter placed, Nurse Danica and Nurse Meredith took a gentle, low-stress approach to help keep her as comfortable as possible - with Danica even lying on the floor so Millie didn’t need to have her leg lifted unnecessarily.

Low-stress handling is an important part of the way we care for our patients at GS Vets. When a pet is already sick, injured or feeling vulnerable, reducing unnecessary restraint and allowing them to remain in a comfortable position can make a big difference to their experience. Reducing fear and anxiety in hospital can also support a pet’s physical wellbeing and recovery, while helping them build more positive associations with veterinary visits in the future.

Providing the care our patients need while helping them feel as safe and comfortable as possible. 💕

Ever wondered why your dog does the things they do? 🐾

This week’s breed: Neapolitan Mastiff

🐶 Origin
The Neapolitan Mastiff originated in Italy and descends from ancient mastiff-type dogs. Developed around the Naples region, these enormous dogs were traditionally kept as guardians of homes, estates and property. Their imposing size, loose skin and unmistakably wrinkled appearance certainly helped them look the part!

🧠 Why were they bred?
Neapolitan Mastiffs were bred primarily for guarding and protection. They needed to be calm and observant while keeping a close eye on their surroundings, stepping in when they believed their family or property was threatened.

🏃‍♂️ What does this mean at home?
Despite their intimidating appearance, Neapolitan Mastiffs can be incredibly affectionate and devoted to their families. They're generally not high-energy dogs and are often perfectly content relaxing at home while keeping an eye on everything happening around them.

Their natural guarding instincts mean they can be wary of unfamiliar people and situations. Early, positive socialisation is particularly important, as is consistent reward-based training. And because an adult Neapolitan Mastiff can be very large and powerful, teaching good manners while they're still a much smaller puppy makes life considerably easier!

🎾 Best ways to enrich them:
• Gentle daily walks and opportunities to sniff
• Short, positive training sessions
• Puzzle feeders and food-based enrichment
• Scent games and “find it” activities
• Calm exploration of different environments
• Appropriate socialisation from a young age
• Plenty of quality time relaxing with their family

Neapolitan Mastiffs are the definition of a gentle giant - with a serious security-guard side! And yes… if you share your home with a Neapolitan Mastiff, a little drool on absolutely everything is probably part of the deal! 😂

Did you know you can help us reduce waste simply by bringing your empty pet food packaging into the clinic? GS Vets has proudly participated in the Royal Canin Recycling Program since 2022, helping give used pet food packaging another life instead of sending it to landfill.

All clean and dry Royal Canin and Eukanuba packaging can be dropped into the large white recycling boxes located in reception at our hospitals. It’s an easy way for our clients and team to make a more sustainable choice! ♻️

Even better, the program donates $1 to Seeing Eye Dogs Australia for every kilogram of packaging recycled, meaning your empty pet food bags can help support a great cause at the same time. 🦮❤️

On Friday, we took two hours out of our busy day to celebrate the incredible people who help keep GS Vets running – and what a fun afternoon it was! 🎉

🍕 Delicious pizza and ribs thanks to Big Pappa's Pizza & Spare Ribs
🧠 A hilarious veterinary-themed quiz that put our team's knowledge to the test
🥤 A little creativity (and a lot of sugar!) with some dirty soda making!

It was the perfect opportunity for our team to relax, have a laugh and enjoy some well-deserved downtime while our wonderful vets took over the hospitals. And yes, we're happy to report the clinics are still standing! 😂

While Vet Nurse & Support Staff Day only comes around once a year, our appreciation for this amazing team is something we feel every single day 💕
