❗Please Read:
Bird flu (H5N1) has been confirmed in Goulburn, detected in a greater crested tern.
The NSW Agriculture Minister's office has stated that bird flu has not been detected in commercial poultry flocks or captive birds, and the risk to human health remains low.
Goulburn and district has 22 poultry industry facilities, including a hatchery and breeding operation, and surveillance has intensified there as a result of the nearby wild bird case. The NSW government is working closely with the poultry industry in Goulburn and across NSW to reduce the risk of the virus spreading into flocks.
H5 can be spread to cats and studies of those infected have reported very high death rates.
Now that we are seeing cases closer to Canberra, please consider what you can do to protect your cats.
❗Prevention tips:
• Keep cats contained— away from birds and wildlife
• Cook all meat thoroughly before feeding
• Wash hands after handling cats and after any contact with birds or poultry
• Keep cats away from poultry, livestock, and farm environments
Signs to watch for — call us immediately if your cat shows and of the following signs and has had potential contact with birds or consumed raw meat:
• Sudden loss of appetite, lethargy, or fever
• Breathing difficulty or rapid breathing
• Wobbling, seizures, circling, or apparent blindness
• Rapid or severe deterioration — especially after contact with birds

❗ RAW DIET CAUTION:
Unpasteurised milk and raw or undercooked meat — including raw pet food — have been linked to H5N1 infection and death in cats overseas.
It is recommended that you switch to cooked food and pasteurised products during this period.
H5N1 can in very rare cases affect humans.
If you develop flu-like symptoms after close contact with a sick cat, contact your GP and mention potential H5N1 exposure.
