Happy Reptile Awareness Day! 🦎🐍
From snakes and lizards to turtles and dragons, reptiles play an important role in our ecosystems! 🌿

Remember to give reptiles plenty of space if you encounter one in the wild, and never attempt to handle a snake yourself. If you spot a snake, keep your distance and contact a professional snake catcher if needed.

Let’s appreciate and protect our amazing reptiles! πŸ’š

Some good information

Some good information

Increased flying-fox illness and deaths are being observed, with food shortages and starvation considered a likely cause.

H5 bird flu is considered an unlikely cause of these events.

Here’s what you can do:

If the bat is alive:

βœ‹ Keep your distance. Never touch or handle a bat unless you are appropriately trained and vaccinated. Keep children, dogs and cats away.

πŸ¦‡ If you find a sick or injured flying-fox, contact your local wildlife carer for advice: https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/topics/animals-and-plants/native-animals/native-animal-facts/land-mammals/flying-foxes/rescuing-and-rehabilitating-flying-foxes

If the bat is dead:

🏞️ If it's on public land, contact your local council or the relevant land manager about safe removal and/or disposal.

🏠 If it’s on your property, follow NSW Government guidance on the safe disposal of animal carcasses:

https://www.dpird.nsw.gov.au/dpi/biosecurity/animal-biosecurity/vet-hub/disposal-of-carcasses

⚠️ If you or your pet has had contact with a bat, remember the risk of Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV). People should wash the affected area thoroughly and promptly seek medical advice. For pets, contact your veterinarian for advice.

πŸ“ž Unusual numbers of sick or dead animals? Call the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

Grass seed season is here! 🌱
As the weather warms up, grass seeds can become a painful problem for our pets. Check your pet after walks, especially around their paws, ears and between their toes.

If you notice any unusual licking, scratching, swelling or discomfort, it’s best to get them checked by a vet. Book online at our website or call to book in with a veterinarian at (02) 6299 2509. πŸ©ΊπŸ’š

Don't forget to check your boots guys!

Local snake catchers are run off their feet, as more snakes are doing the rounds in this warmer weather.

Associate Professor Gavin Smith from ACT Snake Removals says they're averaging 11 calls a day, with that number expected to go above 30 in the coming weeks.

"It's most likely that Canberrans are going to encounter a snake between September and October, as these males are making these journeys, looking for females," he said.
