Running out of room is a good problem. Here's the answer. 🐝

Back in stock: 8-frame full depth brood boxes ($32.50) and 8-frame ideal honey supers ($30.70).

Both are Paulownia, light enough to lift full and a natural insulator for the colony. Flat-packed, so they post well and go together in minutes.

Put a super on before the flow, not after.

Why do we take pollen off our bees, and why do we give it back?

In a good flow the bees bring in far more pollen than the colony can use. So a little of the surplus is trapped at the hive entrance, dried and frozen.

Then comes a dearth. No flowers, no pollen coming in, and a hive full of hungry brood. That is when the stored pollen goes back to them.

Same pollen, same hives, just moved from the time of plenty to the time of need.

Fresh stock of assembled, wired frames in both sizes:

Full depth, $4.20 each. The brood chamber frame, maximum comb for the queen and winter stores.

Ever wondered why a bee sting keeps hurting after the bee has gone?

New research out this week from Macquarie University and UNSW has worked out how a honey bee's stinger keeps pumping venom after it has torn away from the bee.

The stinger is about 2 mm long. Inside it, two barbed lancets slide back and forth on rails, a bit like a reciprocating saw, working the stinger deeper into the skin. Each lancet carries a small valve. On the downstroke the valves seal and build pressure. On the upstroke they collapse so the chamber can refill. Mid-stroke they change shape and slide past each other. Two collapsible pistons pumping in opposite directions, so the flow never stops.

Scientists have known since 1910 that there were valves in there. It took high-speed video of bees stinging a clear gel, microCT scans and a 3D-printed model to see how they actually work.

It is also why you get a stinger out fast. How you do it matters less than how quickly, because every second it stays in, it is still pumping.

The team think the design could inspire tiny pumps for getting drugs into patients with less needling. Not bad for a 2 mm bit of bee.

The spring pallet has landed. 🐝

A pallet of hiveware just came across Bass Strait and it's on the shelf at Port Sorell: 8-frame brood boxes, 8-frame ideal supers, and assembled, wired frames in both sizes.

Boxes are lightweight Paulownia, flat-packed. Frames are NZ pine, assembled and wired with stainless steel, ready to drop in.
