🌏 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝗮𝘆

This National Endangered Species Day, we’re taking a closer look at some of the endangered animals in our own backyard.
Australia is home to some of the world’s most unique wildlife — but sadly, we also have one of the highest extinction rates on the planet.
Today we’re highlighting a few of our most endangered native species and why they urgently need protection.

🦜 𝗢𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲-𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘁
Fewer than 100 remain in the wild. Habitat loss and climate change have pushed this tiny migratory parrot to the brink of extinction.
🐨 𝗞𝗼𝗮𝗹𝗮
Koala populations have declined by up to 50% in some areas over the past 20 years due to habitat destruction, bushfires, disease, and vehicle strikes.
🐦 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿
With fewer than 300 breeding birds left in the wild, loss of flowering woodland habitat has caused severe population declines.
🐸 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗴
More than 80% of the wild population has disappeared due to a deadly fungal disease called chytrid fungus, combined with climate change.
🐾 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆-𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘁
One of the rarest mammals on Earth — only around 400 remain in the wild after decades of habitat loss and predation.
🦎 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗗𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻
Once thought extinct, this tiny reptile is critically endangered due to urban development and destruction of native grasslands.

How you can help:
✔️ Keep cats indoors and dogs supervised
✔️ Plant native trees and pollinator-friendly gardens
✔️ Support wildlife rescue and conservation groups
✔️ Slow down in wildlife zones
✔️ Reduce waste and protect natural habitats
✔️ Learn more and spread awareness

🌟 Story contains graphic content 🌟

A few weeks ago, Port Vets met a very special boy named Frank. Frank was referred to us from another local clinic after a large bone became stuck in his oesophagus.

What followed was a complex and intensive two-week journey, cared for by our surgical and hospital team.
We first performed an endoscopy to locate the bone. However, due to its size it couldn’t be removed this way, so surgery was performed to safely extract it. Unfortunately, the bone had caused significant damage, including two tears in his oesophagus, making things far more complicated.

Frank went on to need two thoracic surgeries to repair the damage, a chest drain to manage air leaking into his chest, and a feeding tube to support him while he healed. Throughout his stay, he was under continuous care, with multiple vets and nurses working around the clock to monitor and support him.

Despite everything, Frank was the happiest of patients and became a firm staff favourite 💛 Always wagging his tail and very clear about his love for food and attention.

There were ups and downs along the way, but step by step he began to heal. After two weeks in hospital and a full clinic effort behind him, we are so incredibly happy to say Frank is now home with his loving family, living his best life 🐾
