Puppies develop inside fluid-filled membranes that protect them throughout pregnancy. The amniotic fluid surrounding each puppy cushions it from pressure and movement while allowing its developing body and limbs to move. At birth, this protective environment suddenly changes, and the puppy must rapidly adapt to breathing air and maintaining circulation.

A puppy’s blood volume is tiny compared with an adult dog’s. This means even a relatively small amount of blood loss can represent a significant percentage of its total circulating blood volume. Bleeding from an umbilical cord or injury that might look minor should therefore be taken seriously in a newborn puppy.

The interval between puppies during whelping isn't always the same. A bitch may deliver puppies relatively close together and then have a resting period before labour resumes. What matters is not just the time on the clock, but whether she is comfortable or actively straining, whether more puppies are expected, and whether there are signs of distress that require veterinary attention.
