🦑🧠 MONDAY MINDBENDER! 🧠🦑

Ever heard of a squid giving itself brain damage by eating dinner? No? Well, welcome to the weird and wonderful world of squid anatomy! 😂

Some squid have a doughnut-shaped brain, with their oesophagus running straight through the middle! 🧠🍩

That means when they swallow food that’s too large, it can squeeze through the brain’s central opening and potentially damage the delicate nervous tissue around it.

Talk about having to chew your food properly! 😬

Imagine having a brain that comes with its own built-in portion-control warning system… and ignoring it anyway. 🤦‍♀️🦑

🐾💚 HAPPY VET NURSE DAY! 💚🐾

Today we’re celebrating those amazing humans who work tirelessly, compassionately (and occasionally covered in unidentifiable bodily fluids 😂) to care for your fur family.

Vet nurses are the unsung heroes of the veterinary world. They comfort the scared, cuddle the sick, wrangle the wriggly, clean up the gross stuff, keep us vets on track and somehow manage to keep smiling through it all. They do so much behind the scenes, often without nearly enough recognition for their hard yakka. ❤️

To our wonderful Alpine Vets nurses — we love you guys to bits! 🥰 We genuinely couldn’t do what we do without you, and the clinic wouldn’t be the same without your dedication, compassion, humour and all-round awesomeness.

So today, give your vet nurse a little extra love. They deserve every bit of it! 🐶🐱🐰

🧠 Monday Mindbender 🐋

Did you know beluga whales are one of the few whales that can actually swim backwards?! 😲

And these guys are pretty unusual in other ways too.

Unlike most whales, the vertebrae in a beluga’s neck aren’t fused together, giving them an incredible amount of flexibility. They can nod, turn and move their heads from side to side — almost like we can! 🐋

And then there’s that enormous, squishy lump on their forehead… 😂

That’s called a **melon**, and it’s filled with specialised fatty tissue. Belugas can actually change the shape of their melon to help focus and fine-tune their echolocation, allowing them to direct their clicks and better interpret the echoes bouncing back from their surroundings.

Basically, they have a built-in, squishy sonar dish on their forehead! 🤯

Nature is pretty bloody clever. 💙🐋

🐍 PET OF THE WEEK — STORM! 🐍

This week’s Pet of the Week is gorgeous Storm, who decided that playing with a snake seemed like a *fantastic* idea… and unfortunately came off very much second best! 😬

Thankfully, Storm’s parents were incredibly astute and realised very quickly that something was seriously wrong.

Storm walked into the clinic, but within just 30 minutes he was struggling to stand and breathing hard. We immediately started antivenom and supportive IV fluids, but his symptoms continued to worsen, so he needed a second vial of antivenom.

Given how quickly things were changing, Storm came home with me overnight so I could keep a very close eye on him and monitor his vital signs.

Thankfully, he stabilised overnight and by the following afternoon he was well enough to head home — with no evidence of his very close call! ❤️

Storm is one very lucky pup. 🥰

And a timely reminder that snake bites can progress incredibly quickly. If you suspect your pet has encountered a snake, don’t wait for symptoms to become severe — get them to a vet immediately. 🐍🚨

We’re very happy to report that Storm is back to being his usual cheeky self… although hopefully with slightly better judgement about his choice of playmates! 😂❤️

🐍 SNAKE BITE SEASON IS UPON US! 🐍

The weather is warming up, which means our local nope ropes are becoming increasingly active. 😳

Now is a great time to clear the garden of rubbish, piles of timber, sheets of iron and other clutter that might provide a nice little hidey hole for a snake.

Keeping grass and weeds short can also help make your yard a little less appealing to our slithery neighbours.

But even with the best prevention, snake bites happen.

Signs of snake envenomation in pets can include:

🤮 Vomiting
💩 Diarrhoea
🫨 Wobbliness or weakness
😵 Collapse
⚡ Seizures
🐾 Paralysis
💨 Difficulty breathing

And here’s the REALLY important bit…

Some pets can collapse within 10–15 minutes of a snake encounter, then appear to recover.

🚨 DO NOT be fooled by this! 🚨

This temporary improvement can be followed by a rapid and potentially life-threatening deterioration.

Please don’t take a “wait and see” approach if you suspect your pet has been bitten.

☎️ Contact your vet immediately and get your pet in for assessment and treatment.

The sooner we can start appropriate treatment, including antivenom when indicated, the better the chance of getting on top of the envenomation before it becomes severe.

Snake bites are an emergency.

If you suspect a snake bite, don’t wait for symptoms to worsen. Get moving! 🐍🚗💨

Stay safe out there, everyone — and keep those four-legged snake hunters under close supervision! 🐶🐱❤️

🧠 MONDAY MINDBENDER! 🧠

🦍 DID YOU KNOW THAT GORILLAS BURP WHEN THEY’RE HAPPY? 😂

Yep. You read that correctly.

Gorillas make a soft belching or burping-like sound that is actually an important part of their communication. These gentle grumbles and belches are often associated with relaxed, comfortable gorillas — particularly when they’re happily munching on their favourite foods. 😋

They also make humming and singing-like sounds when they’re feeling content.

So basically…

Happy gorilla = burpy gorilla. 😂

Imagine if humans worked the same way…

“Are you alright?”

“Yep. Just had a really nice lunch.”
BUUUUURP. 😌

Maybe they’re my spirit animal?! 😜

Honestly, gorillas might have this whole expressing your feelings through bodily noises thing pretty well sorted. 🤣🦍

💅 MISS REMY HAS HAD A FASHION UPGRADE! 💅

Miss Remy came in for a lump removal last week, but unfortunately decided that her surgical wound was far too interesting to leave alone. 😜

We tried the traditional “cone of shame”, but both Remy AND her mum were firmly of the opinion that it was absolutely not happening. 😂

So today we went with a surgical suit instead…

And just LOOK at her! 😍

Miss Remy is looking very schnazzy indeed. Pretty sure she thinks it matches her ensemble perfectly and is wondering why we didn’t suggest it in the first place. 💃🐶

Fashionable **AND** wound-safe.

🐾 Sometimes my job has some serious perks…

Today’s perk was a whole pile of puppy cuddles! 🥰🐶

These little pruppets came in for their very first vet visit for vaccinations and microchips — and they were pretty much ridiculously cute from start to finish.

There may have been an excessive amount of cuddling.

And possibly some very unprofessional amounts of puppy smooshing. 😂

They’re just so dang cute! ❤️🐾

Honestly, it’s a tough job… but someone has to do it. 😉

❤️ **A LITTLE UPDATE ON LADY PENELOPE** ❤️

A huge thank you to everyone who has reached out about my little doggo. I’m truly touched by the genuine affection and support you’ve shown to both Penny and our family. It means more than I can say. 🥰

Lady Penelope may have turned a little corner today. We’re seeing glimpses of her usual *Penny-ness* again, and she has even eaten a tiny bit of food. ❤️

She’s definitely not out of the woods yet, but she’s in a better position to tackle whatever comes next.

She may lose her poor eye, but that’s the least of our concerns right now.

Thank you again for all your kindness, sympathy and understanding over the past few days. It’s incredibly heartwarming to know how many people are quietly cheering our girl on. ❤️🐾

🐾 **PET OF THE WEEK — TEDDY!** 🐾

Teddy is one of our absolute favourite patients. He’s just so ridiculously sweet and cuddly that it’s impossible not to fall in love with him. 🥰

Teddy recently underwent an arthroscope for elbow dysplasia at a referral centre and came back to us for a quick post-op check.

He’s doing brilliantly and seems to have barely noticed that he’s had surgery at all! 🤣

Most importantly, though, we got to admire his little naked peg leg! 😜🦵

Teddy certainly doesn’t care if people point and laugh. As far as he’s concerned, attention is attention, and he is absolutely here for it. 😂❤️

Keep up the good work, Teddy! We’re looking forward to seeing that little leg fully furred again soon. 🐶💕
