Lacerations are very common for horse owners (yes sorry to say!!) and unfortunately rather unforgiving when it comes to the lower limb due to minimal soft tissue protection. Due to this many vital structures are close to the surface, which means quick assessment and timely veterinary care are essential to ensure the best possible outcome.

This young 2yr was presented to West Coast Veterinary Hospital with a severe wound involving a complete laceration of the long digital extensor tendon and the lateral digital extensor tendon.

These structures are critical for normal limb placement and extension. Damage to these tendons created knuckling and loss of normal limb function which can be rather traumatic to witness. Here are a series of images of this cases progression post surgery and stable confinement with a cast. This young horse is back to normal herd environment and sound.

šŸ› Parasite Awareness Month is around the corner 🐓🐶🐱

Parasites may be small, but the problems they cause certainly aren’t. That’s why April is Parasite Awareness Month at West Coast Vets — a time to shine a spotlight on protecting your horses and pets from the dangers of internal and external parasites.

From worms and ticks to mites and bots, parasites can affect performance, weight, coat quality, and overall health. The good news? With proactive management, regular testing, and targeted treatment plans, these issues are completely preventable.

Throughout the month, our team will be sharing important parasite facts, seasonal risks, and tailored prevention strategies to help keep your animals in peak condition. Now is the perfect time to consider freezing semen from your stallion at the end of our reproduction season. Did you also know you can also achieve freezing semen from a c**t during castration? This procedure is know as a Epididymal Flush and more can be found here;

Why Storing Frozen Semen Is a Smart Advantage for Your Stallion

Planning ahead is one of the best things you can do for your breeding program, and having frozen semen stored for your stallion gives you flexibility, security, and long-term value.

āœ”ļø Breed Anytime, Anywhere
Frozen semen allows you to breed mares across Australia, without needing your stallion onsite. It eliminates transport stress, scheduling issues, and distance limitations.

āœ”ļø Protects Your Stallion’s Genetic Legacy
Unexpected injuries, illness, or retirement can happen. Having semen frozen ensures your stallion’s genetics are preserved, giving you peace of mind and safeguarding years of training and investment.

āœ”ļø Supports Higher Breeding Efficiency
Frozen semen can be used when mares are cycling outside the stallion’s natural season, for embryo transfer programs, or to support tighter breeding management—leading to higher conception efficiency in the right hands.

āœ”ļø Ideal for Busy Competition Stallions
Competing stallions don’t have to compromise performance or routine for collections. With frozen semen stored, you can continue breeding without interrupting their schedule.

āœ”ļø Long-Term Storage With No Decline in Quality
When frozen and stored correctly, semen maintains its quality for decades. It’s a reliable, stable option that allows your breeding program to evolve over time.

Customised straws can be ordered and ready for freezing within 5 working days.

Breeding Q&A with our team vets - Dr Codie Doak-Smith

When or why are c-sections performed?

I love caesareans! We perform both elective (planned) and emergency caesareans at WCVH. With planned caesareans these are commonly due to a very small or very large litter size or larger foetuses. Emergency caesareans are performed because of maternal fatigue, issues with uterine contractions and/or puppy distress. Signs of these include green discharge, increased time between puppies/kittens, or weaker contractions. We can also check puppies/kittens heartrates using the ultrasound. If you are new to breeding or are unsure, we are always happy to discuss what's happening over the phone and see if there is anything to be concerned about.

What makes a caesarean successful — and how do we give newborn's the best possible start?

Teamwork and efficiency. Once we have determined a caesarean is indicated, we aim to get those babies out as quick and safely as possible. We have oxygen in front of mum while we are preparing her for surgery, and follow the latest gold standard guidelines for anaesthesia, pain relief and puppy/kitten resuscitation. While the vet is getting puppies/kittens out, it is all hands on deck to take them to the warm bench and get them dry and awake. It is the best thing in the world hearing those first squeals and mews from the surgery theatre! Every vet here gets taught how to do caesareans from day 1; in fact I think I performed more caesareans in my first 6 months of work here than routine speys!

Something our team are seeing more of and a hot topic of discussion is, Cervical Spine Pain In Horses!
Neck pain is an often under-recognised cause of poor performance and abnormal way of going under saddle. Horses may feel not quite right when riding, resist contact, struggle to bend, or feel uneven despite no obvious limb lameness.

Diagnosis Advanced imaging such as nuclear scintigraphy can help identify areas of increased bone activity. Increased uptake in the cervical spine indicates active inflammation or stress within the vertebrae—commonly iinvolving the articular facet joints. Treatment One effective treatment option is corticosteroid (cortisone) injections into the affected cervical facet joints.

These injections aim to:
šŸ’‰Reduce inflammation
šŸ’ŠRelieve pain
🐓Improve Comfort, Rideability, Performance

When combined with appropriate rehabilitation and saddle/rider assessment, many horses show significant clinical improvement. If your horse feels uncomfortable through the neck or isn’t performing as expected, a thorough work-up is essential—neck pain is real, diagnosable, and treatable.
