🐴 Meet the Team: Bella 🐴

We’re excited to introduce Bella!

Bella has been riding for as long as she can remember and has coached for several years. She’s been competing mainly in show jumping for around five years, and it’s definitely her favourite discipline.

Bella has weekly lessons with Milan Caporn and loves bringing new tips and ideas back to her own students.

She and her horses Dakota and Kevin have recently picked up placings at the State Showjumping Titles, WASJA Winter Showjumping Champs and Patrons Cup! 🏆

Her favourite school horses are Eliza and our newest addition, Bart! 💙

🐴 Meet the Team: Emily Hartley 🐴

We’re so excited to welcome Emily back to Oakford after some time away!

Emily has been riding her whole life and has coached for many years. She discovered her love for dressage around four years ago, and it quickly became her favourite discipline. Emily is taught by Colin Chantler, who was named EWA Dressage Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2019. She’s looking forward to passing on some of his wisdom to her own students.

Emily recently won Champion Members Novice at the Swan River Dressage Champs! 🏆

Her favourite school horse is a toss-up between Tilly and Woody—and ask her about her beautiful chestnut gelding, Clyde! 💙

Top Tip Tuesday: Horse care 🐴

Riding isn’t just riding! A lesson may be the part you look forward to most, but caring for a horse before and after you get on is a big part of being a good horse person.

Before your get on, ask your instructor to show you how to:

🐴 Approach and handle a horse safely
🧹 Groom and check your horse
🪢 Fit a headcollar correctly
🐎 Check that your tack is on correctly

After your lesson, learn how to:

✨ Untack and put equipment away safely
🧽 Groom your horse and check for rubs or injuries
💧 Make sure they have access to water
🧹 Leave your horse and their area tidy

Thinking about owning a horse one day? There’s lots to learn before taking that step. Horse ownership means caring for your horse every day, arranging regular farrier and vet care, understanding feeding and turnout, keeping up with costs, and having a plan for holidays or emergencies.

We offer stable management lessons to help riders learn more about horse care and what’s involved in looking after a horse. Ask your instructor if you’d like to know more!

What’s one horse care skill you’d love to learn? 💙

It’s the first day of the new term! 🐴💙

We can’t wait to see everyone back at the yard! Don’t forget to have a chat with your instructor this week and think about what you’d like to work towards this term.

Your goal could be to:

✨ Feel more confident
✨ Improve your balance or position
✨ Try something new
✨ Master a transition
✨ Improve your canter
✨ Tackle a pole, jump or cross-country challenge

Or maybe your goal is simply to have fun, enjoy time with the horses and make some lovely memories. That’s a brilliant goal too! 🐎

What would you like your riding goal to be this term? Let us know in the comments! 💬

Interested in getting more involved in the sport?

A cross-country jump judge (sometimes called a helper duty) watches riders jump a particular fence and records what happens. You’ll be right out on course, watching the event up close and getting a behind-the-scenes look at how a competition runs.

It can be a fun way to spend a day at an event, learn more about the sport and be part of the action as you continue your own riding journey. Jump judges are paid $70 per rider.

This opportunity is organised separately from Showgrounds Equestrian Centre. Click the link to read the official event post and find out how to put your name down. Helper duties are for people aged 16 and over, and a briefing is mandatory.
