With over 154 team members, our nursing and support team are the heartbeat of everything we do. Do you have a passion for large animal nursing, a positive attitude and a team-first mindset? We want you!

The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University is home to the only Veterinary School in Western Australia, and our Equine and Farm Animal departments deliver specialist services, advanced diagnostics and gold-standard care – all while training the next generation of veterinarians. Our Large Animal team now has a rare opportunity for a new team member to join us.

What the role looks like:
- High-level nursing care for horses, foals and farm animals

- Exposure to surgery, advanced imaging, specialist orthopaedic examinations, ambulatory work and Large Animal reception

-Supervising and teaching students in a supportive, collaborative environment

- Fixed term (12 months, with opportunity to extend) | Full time, 37.5 hours per week

- $74,809 – $82,011 (pro rata) plus 17% employer superannuation

What you'll bring:
- Certificate IV or Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (registrable in WA)

- Confident handling and restraint of large animals – racehorses, performance horses, foals, farm animals and those cheeky little ponies!

- Sound knowledge of diagnostic and surgical equipment, sterilisation and aseptic technique

- Great communication skills, initiative and the flexibility to work rotating shifts

Nurses with small animal experience and strong large animal handling skills are absolutely encouraged to apply. You'll also enjoy a generous CPD allowance, AVA membership supported by the hospital, and ongoing mentorship from our specialists and senior nursing team.

Ever wondered what actually happens when your pet is referred to a cardiologist? ❤️

A heart murmur, an irregular heartbeat or a fainting episode can be worrying news – and being referred to a specialist can feel like a big step. In this short video, our Cardiology team walks you through exactly what to expect on the day, so you and your pet can arrive feeling prepared.

Here’s what a cardiology consult usually involves:
• 🩺 A detailed chat about your pet’s history and symptoms, followed by a thorough physical examination

• 🫀 An echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) to look at the heart’s structure and how well it’s pumping – no anaesthetic required for most pets

• 📈 An ECG (rhythm strip of the heart) to look at the heart’s rhythm and diagnose electric disturbances in the heart

• 🩸 Blood pressure assessment to screen for high or low blood pressure

• 🔬 Additional tests where needed, such as chest x-rays, blood tests, genetic tests, cardiac CT, cardiac MRI, or an ambulatory ECG monitor (Holter monitor) to record the heart rhythm at home

• 💬 A clear explanation of the findings and a treatment plan tailored to your pet, your family and your day-to-day life

• 📩 A full report back to your regular vet, so everyone caring for your pet stays on the same page

Our Cardiology service is supported by the wider multidisciplinary team at The Animal Hospital – including internal medicine, surgery, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia and our 24/7 Emergency and Critical Care team – so complex cases are never managed in isolation.

A referral from your regular or emergency vet is needed to book a cardiology appointment. Vets can refer via the referrals page on our website. Our Cardiology service operates Monday, Tuesday and Friday during business hours – for emergencies outside these times, our Emergency and Critical Care team is here 24/7 on 1300 652 494.

🐾 Happy International Dog Day! 🐾

Today the world celebrates our dogs – the family members, the farm workers, the assistance dogs, the couch companions and the ones still waiting for a home.

At The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University, we're lucky enough to meet hundreds of them every week – from routine check-ups in Primary Care, to emergency and critical care, surgery, oncology, cardiology, internal medicine and diagnostic imaging. Every wagging tail that comes through our doors also helps teach the next generation of veterinarians and veterinary nurses, so the care your dog receives today shapes the care dogs receive for years to come. 💚

A few simple ways to celebrate: an extra-long walk, a fresh bowl of water, up-to-date vaccinations and parasite prevention, a quick check that their microchip details are current – and plenty of pats!

🐄 We’re Hiring – Large Animal Veterinary Technician Lead!

We are looking for a Large Animal Veterinary Technician Lead to join our Large Animal team.

This is a hands-on role supporting our clinicians, students and patients across the hospital and our farms — from livestock handling and restraint through to assisting with procedures, sample collection and day-to-day clinical support.

What we’re looking for:
• Farm animal experience — confident and safe around cattle, sheep and other livestock
• An Australian Veterinary Technician qualification (or equivalent) would be highly advantageous
• A team player who enjoys teaching, and is keen to help train the next generation of veterinary professionals

Please note: the qualification criteria in the advertisement is deliberately broad. If you hold an Australian Veterinary Technician qualification or an equivalent combination of education and hands-on livestock experience, we would love to hear from you!

💚 🐾 100 hearts and counting! 🐾 💚

We’re thrilled to share that our Cardiology and Interventional Radiology service at The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University has now completed 100 cardiac examinations since opening on Monday 6 July.

Reaching this milestone in such a short time is a real testament to the trust placed in our team. To every client who has brought their beloved pet through our doors, and to every referring veterinarian who has entrusted us with their patients – thank you. Your confidence in our service means the world to us, and it’s a privilege to care for these animals alongside you.

A huge congratulations to Dr Joon Seo and the wider Cardiology team, and to our nurses, support staff and colleagues across the hospital whose teamwork makes this specialist care possible.
