Don't Go Astray Inc - Helping Animals In Need

Don't Go Astray Inc - Helping Animals In Need Don't Go Astray Inc. help surrendered and stray animals in need. Don't Go Astray helps animals in need, giving them the second chance they deserve.

We assist with veterinary treatment, rehabilitation, fostering and re-homing of animals that just want to be loved. Our not-for-profit organisation was formed in June 2018, and within six months was honoured with the RSPCA Humane Award – a huge deal for newcomers such as ourselves. This encouragement has galvanised our passion and commitment and we became a registered not for profit February 2019.

Driven by a shared desire to make a positive impact, our team's mission is to make a difference in the lives of surrendered and stray animals. Each member of Don't Go Astray comes from the veterinary and animal rescue industry, pooling a broad range of complementary skills. Together, our aim is not just to care for animals, but to provide assistance for people unable to meet the financial cost of emergency veterinary care.

Accepting Applications for Jayne 🐾

Jayne is a handsome, confident, cuddly boy. He is extremely cat social (but very boisterous) and he will adjust to a cat-friendly dog.

He is a velcro-cat and he definitely wants to be involved in whatever you're doing. He's highly food motivated and loves going for walks in his harness.

Jayne is seeking a fun, busy house where he can be involved in activities with other animals or people. He is a huge cuddle machine and he wants to make cookies and be in your lap all day!

RHINO 🐾 Staffy X - Applications have closed

Rhino is nearly 6 weeks old now and will have his first vaccination in the coming weeks. He has completely recovered from his head trauma and is thriving. 💙

This little pup is full of Staffy-itude and has the cutest personality. He will happily tell you off if you don’t give him plenty of attention! He is very good with children over 3 years old and would easily adapt to any loving family environment.

We are now accepting expressions of interest for either a foster-to-adopt or full adoption arrangement.

It’s so important for puppies to have stability at such a young age, and Rhino deserves a forever family who will nurture his growth and shower him with love.

Rhino’s adoption fee is $600, which helps cover his initial veterinary work, including:
• Three puppy vaccinations
• Microchip
• Sterilisation
All at our preferred veterinary hospital (south of the river).

Applications are now open. Please note that Rhino will not go to his new home until after his first vaccination.

Please be patient while waiting for a response, as we typically receive a large number of applications for puppies and may not be able to reply to everyone.

Meet Rhino — 5-week-old Staffy X pup. 💙

Little Rhino was surrendered to a veterinary hospital over the weekend with significant swelling to his head caused by trauma.

At this stage, we’re still unsure exactly what happened to him, but he was clearly very sore and uncomfortable.

Rhino is now safe in foster care, where he’s being closely monitored as he recovers.

Despite everything he’s been through, this brave little boy is already showing his fighting spirit.

We will keep you posted with his recovery 🙏.

GUESS WHAT!
We have some wonderful news to share this Sunday night.

Bean’s albumin levels are continuing to improve.

When we tested him last night, his levels had risen from 18g/L to 24g/L — a fantastic result.

We couldn’t be happier and truly feel he is well on his way to making a full recovery. He will continue to be closely monitored over the coming week.

And there’s even more amazing news 🙌.
Beans foster carer has officially decided to adopt him, meaning Beans now has his forever home 💙.

We are absolutely overjoyed 🫶.

Thank you all so much for your incredible support throughout this journey. It was touch and go for a while, but Bean has proven he’s a true little fighter.

Huge thank you to the animal hospital, the vets, nurses for all your hard work ensuring Bean had gold standard care!
The love and care really helped in his recovery.

Beautiful outcome.

Every hour is playtime — even 2am for little BEAN 💛

Little Bean is doing so well in his foster home. Surrounded by love and attention, he’s finally able to enjoy being a happy puppy again now that he’s feeling a little better and out of hospital.
He’s nearly 8 weeks old now.

We’re still keeping a close eye on his blood work, with another blood test scheduled for the end of this week.

𝗦𝗼 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻?
Albumin is a protein made by the liver, and the normal range in dogs is between 21–36. When little Bean was admitted, his albumin level was 16g/L. We repeated the test over 48 hours and it remained the same before increasing slightly to 18g/L. While this is an improvement, it is still below the normal range, so we will continue monitoring closely.

Puppies can naturally have slightly lower albumin levels, but because of Bean’s initial symptoms, we want to ensure there are no underlying concerns affecting his recovery. Low albumin levels (hypoalbuminemia) in puppies can sometimes point to issues such as liver dysfunction, kidney disease, or severe infection.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁?
If Bean’s albumin levels remain low, we will proceed with an ultrasound, which has already been pre-booked for next week if needed. The sonographer will examine his internal organs, especially his liver and kidneys to check for any abnormalities and we make a plan from there.

THANK YOU for all your support and we will continue to keep you updated.

Update - Our little Bean ❤️.

Bean is now out of the hospital and into a loving foster home. While he is doing much better each day and starting to find his little way in this world, unfortunately, there is still concerns regarding his blood work.

His blood work indicates that his liver may not be able to produce enough Albumin (a crucial protein that helps keep fluid within the blood vessels) as well as having elevated bile acids (which indicates liver dysfunction)😢.

While we are continuing to monitor these values, lil' Bean may need to go for a specialty abdominal ultrasound & possibly even a CT scan to confirm a full diagnosis.

We truly appreciate everyone’s likes, comments, shares, and especially the donations. Thanks to your support, we’ve been able to cover the cost of Bean’s current stay at the animal hospital which was over $1000.00 in care so far. He’ll need ongoing blood tests this week to monitor his levels, and we’ll take things step by step from there.

At just 7 weeks of age, he is so young to be going through something like this, we don't know what the outcome will be yet however, we’re focused on doing what’s best for him and will continue to care for him however we can.

🙏🙏🙏🙏

Meet Bean (7 weeks old) — he needs our help.

Little Bean was surrendered to a vet hospital and is very unwell. Tests are still underway to determine what’s causing his condition.

We’re expecting significant veterinary costs and have only just begun his treatment. The vets are working tirelessly to find answers and give him the best chance.

Right now, he’s extremely weak and lethargic.

He will be staying at the animal hospital, having around the clock care by the amazing Vets & Veterinary Nursing team.

We’re holding onto hope with everything we have for you, Bean 🙏.
