Magpies are most likely to swoop during breeding season when they’re protecting their eggs or babies.
🪶 What are they trying to tell you?
A swoop is essentially a warning:
“You’re too close to my nest. Please move away.”
Magpies often give cues before swooping, so learning to recognise them can help avoid conflict.
Look for:
👀 Watching or following you
📢 Warning calls
🪶 Flying low nearby
🚲 Repeatedly approaching people in the area
Listen to the cues. If a magpie is warning you, calmly move away and give them space.
