🥜🥜 Macadamia Nuts May Be a Tasty Treat for Humans… But They Can Be Toxic to Dogs

Minka and Milo paid us an urgent visit after helping themselves to some macadamia nuts.

Because their owners realised what had happened and contacted us straight away, we were able to induce vomiting before the nuts had a chance to be digested and absorbed.

Minka brought up chewed macadamia nuts, while Milo brought up both chewed nuts and shell fragments.

Macadamia nuts are highly toxic to dogs and can cause:

* Weakness, particularly in the hind legs
* Wobbliness or difficulty walking
* Tremors
* Vomiting
* Fever
* Lethargy

In some cases, affected dogs can become so weak they are unable to stand.

Thankfully, because Minka and Milo were treated quickly, we were able to remove the nuts before they caused more serious problems.

If your dog eats macadamia nuts, contact your veterinarian immediately. The sooner treatment is started, the better the outcome.

Poor little Lila came to see us after being stung by a bee on her right upper lip. The swelling appeared almost immediately, but thankfully her owners saw exactly what had happened and removed the stinger straight away.

That quick action may have made a huge difference.

When a bee stings, it continues to inject venom for as long as the stinger remains in the skin. Removing it promptly helps reduce the amount of venom delivered and can lessen the severity of the reaction.

In many dogs, a bee sting will cause localised swelling and discomfort. But in some cases, it can trigger a severe allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. This is a medical emergency that can cause:

* Rapid facial swelling
* Vomiting or diarrhoea
* Difficulty breathing
* Collapse
* Shock

French Bulldogs and other brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds can be particularly vulnerable because they already have narrowed airways. Even mild swelling around the face, lips or throat can significantly impact their ability to breathe.

Lila was treated with an injection of antihistamine and a steroid to reduce the allergic reaction and swelling. She was feeling much more comfortable and was able to head home, with her lip already starting to go down within a few hours of her visit.

🐶🐝 If your pet is stung by a bee and develops swelling, breathing difficulties, vomiting, or seems unwell, seek veterinary attention immediately. What starts as a simple sting can escalate very quickly.

Thankfully, Lila’s owners acted fast, and she is now back to her usual adorable self. 💛

Casper came in to Warwick Veterinary Hospital for a routine castration, but once he was safely asleep under general anaesthetic, we were able to give him a full nose-to-tail check.

When we examined his ears, we found that both ear canals were completely packed with hair, so much so that we couldn’t see down into them at all.

Poodle breeds and poodle crosses, like Casper, are particularly prone to growing excessive hair inside their ear canals. When this hair builds up, it can trap wax, moisture and debris, reducing airflow and creating the perfect environment for yeast and bacterial infections. This often leads to itchy, uncomfortable ears.

We carefully plucked the excess hair to open up the ear canals and improve ventilation. Once the hair was removed, we discovered a significant amount of debris sitting deep within the hair in the canals (see videos in the comments!).

Casper’s ears were then thoroughly cleaned, and we’re sure he is feeling much more comfortable now that all of that hair and debris has been removed.

Sometimes a routine procedure gives us the opportunity to uncover and fix problems that owners may not even realise are causing their pet discomfort.

🥹 How are these two still waiting? 🐾

We honestly cannot believe that Ant and Dec are still here at Warwick Vet Hospital and no one has come to meet them yet.

Their brothers, PJ and Duncan, have already found their forever homes… but these two gorgeous boys are still waiting for someone to choose them.

Ant and Dec came off the streets just a few weeks ago. They were tiny, scared and just trying to survive. They have come a long way since arriving in care, but they are still a little shy and are learning that people can be trusted.

Because they are still building their confidence, they will need a home with someone willing to give them a little time and patience to settle in. The reward will be watching them continue to blossom in a home of their own.

The best thing about these two is the bond they share. They are always together… sleeping together, playing together and giving each other confidence. Because of that, we would absolutely love to see them adopted together. ❤️

At only 8 weeks old, they are incredibly adaptable and should settle well into most homes. They would likely love another friendly cat and, with the right introductions, should also do well with a dog.

Adoption fee: $380 each

This includes:
• Desexing
• Microchipping
• Two vaccinations

If you’ve been thinking about adding two kittens to your family, these boys are as good as they come.

📩 Please send us a message or contact Warwick Vet Hospital on 08-92431997 if you would like to come and meet them.

Please share this post so we can help Ant and Dec find the loving home they deserve… together. 🐾❤️

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing mums out there… whether your children have 2 legs, 4 legs, or a few more.

Being a mum is about love, care, patience and showing up every single day for those who depend on you.

That might mean school drop-offs, dog walks, cleaning litter trays, early morning starts, or making sure a much-loved pet is cared for when they need you most. 🐾❤️

No matter what your family looks like, the love you give means everything.

To all the mums, pet mums, foster mums, step-mums and grandmothers, we hope you feel appreciated and spoiled today.

Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Warwick Vet Hospital. 💐🐾

🐾 2 little street boys looking for homes 🐾

Meet Ant & Dec🤎
10 weeks old and honestly… just the cutest little guys.

They came off the streets only 2 weeks ago, a bit unsure and trying to figure things out.
Now they’ve turned into purring little fur machines who just want attention, food, and to play.

At this age they’re super adaptable, so they should settle into most homes really well.
They would love a cat friend… and with the right introductions could easily live with a dog too.

They’re still babies, so expect a bit of chaos, zoomies, and general kitten cuteness…

✨ Would be great in pairs or in a home with another friendly cat

Adoption fee: $380 each
Includes desexing, microchipping & 2 vaccinations

If you’ve been thinking about a kitten (or two)… now’s your chance.
