Sometimes what seems warm for us can actually make dogs colder.

Blankets and towels easily absorb rain, moisture, and even the dog’s own body heat. Once the fabric becomes wet, it acts like a wick, pulling warmth away from the dog and transferring it to the ground. Instead of insulation, the dog ends up lying on a cold, damp surface that slowly drains body heat.

Straw works differently.

Dry straw traps pockets of air that help retain warmth while allowing moisture to pass through without soaking the bedding. This creates a dry, insulated space where a dog can curl up and maintain body heat even in cold or wet conditions.

For outdoor dog shelters, the simple rule is this:

Avoid fabric bedding if there is no heater.
Use clean, dry straw instead and replace it regularly.

A small change in bedding can make a big difference in keeping a dog warm and safe during cold weather. 🐾

Helping your dog calm down is not always about more exercise. Sometimes it is about helping their nervous system settle.

The vagus nerve plays a key role in switching the body into a relaxed state. Gentle, intentional touch can support that calming response.

You can try simple techniques like:

• Light tapping or rhythmic clapping along the upper back and rib area for a minute or two
• Slow ear massage, especially at the base of the ears
• Brief cool contact with a damp cloth on the face or neck
• Placing your hand gently over your dog’s chest while you breathe slowly and deeply

The key is softness and observation. If your dog leans in, softens their eyes, or sighs, you are likely helping them settle. If they pull away, stop and adjust.

Calm starts with you. When you regulate your breathing and energy, your dog often follows.

Have you ever noticed how quickly your dog relaxes with gentle touch?

🐕☀️ Why shaving double-coated dogs can make them hotter!

It sounds helpful, but shaving double coated breeds can actually make summer harder for them.

Breeds like Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Huskies & Shepherds use their double coat to regulate body temperature and protect their skin from heat and sun.

✂️ Shaving can:
🐾Remove natural insulation
🐾Increase heat absorption
🐾Raise the risk of sunburn and skin issues
🐾Affect healthy coat regrowth

🪮 So what’s better than shaving? Brushing!
Regular brushing removes loose undercoat, improves airflow, prevents heat-trapping mats, and allows the coat to do its job, keeping your dog cooler naturally.

Wishing you all a merry Christmas and a very happy new year, from us here at Barkn' bath WA.🎄✨
