🌴🐾 Sweet Greta recently presented to Port City Emergency Vets after ingesting part of a sago palm, a highly toxic plant that can be life-threatening to dogs.

⚠️ Sago palms are extremely poisonous, with all parts of the plant being toxic, particularly the seeds. Ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, loss of appetite and, in severe cases, liver failure.

Despite her hospital visit, Greta was the absolute goodest girl! 💕 She even insisted on carrying her own lead in her mouth while walking around the hospital. 🥹

🌿 If you suspect your dog has eaten any part of a sago palm, seek veterinary attention immediately, even if they aren’t showing symptoms.

🌾🐾 GRASS SEED SEASON IS HERE!🐾🌾

With the weather warming up, grass seeds are becoming a common danger for our four-legged friends!

Meet Zion, one of our patients, who paid us an unexpected visit earlier today after becoming distressed and experiencing sudden, repeated sneezing. Our team discovered a large grass seed lodged inside his nose, which was successfully removed! 🐶💙

While they might look harmless, grass seeds can cause serious problems. Their sharp, pointed ends allow them to become lodged in the skin, ears, eyes, nose and paws, and they can even migrate deeper into the body.

🚨SIGNS TO WATCH OUT FOR:
🌾 Sudden, excessive sneezing or nasal discharge
🌾 Shaking their head or scratching at their ears
🌾 Excessive licking or chewing at their paws
🌾 Swelling, redness or small wounds between the toes
🌾 Squinting, watery eyes or eye irritation
🌾 Unexplained pain, limping or discomfort

Prevention is key - check your dog’s coat, paws and ears after walks, particularly if they’ve been exploring long grass or dry, grassy areas.

If your dog suddenly develops any of these symptoms, don’t ignore them! Grass seeds can become deeply embedded and may require veterinary intervention to remove safely.

Meet Verona 🤎🐾🤎

Verona first presented to Port City Emergency Vets following a car accident, leaving her with multiple injuries requiring immediate stabilisation and intensive care. Initial concerns included internal haemorrhage, traumatic wounds, and right hind limb joint instability. She underwent exploratory laparotomy and splenectomy to address abdominal bleeding, alongside wound management and supportive treatment.

Following stabilisation, Verona’s care focused on ongoing wound management, infection control, pain management, and monitoring of her orthopaedic injuries. Her soft tissue injuries required repeated assessments, debridement, and bandage changes while allowing time for healing before definitive orthopaedic intervention could be considered.

Throughout her hospitalisation and follow-up care, Verona continued to progress. Her wounds improved, swelling reduced, and she remained ambulatory with ongoing support and rehabilitation.

From emergency stabilisation to recovery planning, Verona’s case highlights the importance of staged trauma management, immediate emergency care, and a patient who continued to exceed expectations.

A long road, many milestones, and one very resilient girl, Verona has proved to everyone how much of a fighter she is 🤎🐶
