‼️ H5N1 (Bird Flu) Detected in Western Australia – what we know and what you can do now ‼️

The recent detection of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI H5N1) in Western Australia (and now South Australia) has understandably generated concern among bird owners and wildlife lovers.

Overseas, this virus has caused significant losses of wildlife, particularly waterbirds and seabirds, and has also affected some marine mammal populations. Its arrival in Australia presents a new challenge, with concerns that some of our iconic and threatened native bird species could be at risk if the virus becomes established in wild bird populations.

The good news is that Australia has been preparing for this possibility for many years. Guided by the experiences of other countries, extensive surveillance, monitoring and emergency response programs have been developed to detect and respond to diseases like H5N1 quickly. While the situation will continue to evolve, the systems currently in place are designed to identify cases early and support a coordinated response.

For companion bird owners, there is no need for panic, as currently the risk to most pet birds remains low, This is, however, a timely reminder of the importance of using good biosecurity practices and early recognition of illness.

Simple steps that can help protect your birds include:
✅ Preventing contact with wild birds and their droppings
✅ Keeping food and water bowls clean and protected from wild birds
✅ Avoiding feeding wild birds on your property
✅ Washing your hands before and after handling birds
✅ Cleaning and disinfecting cages, aviaries and equipment regularly
✅ Avoiding sharing equipment between bird households
✅ Isolating any sick birds from others and seeking veterinary advice promptly

⚠️ If you encounter suspicious sick or dead wild birds, do not handle them. Record the location if possible and report them to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.

⭐⭐What are we doing?⭐⭐

As a veterinary hospital with a strong focus on bird medicine, we are closely monitoring developments and have strengthened our biosecurity procedures to ensure we can continue to provide safe care for our patients, clients and staff.

Should the need arise, we have the ability to rapidly adapt our procedures, including consulting birds in a dedicated area separate from our main hospital. We will continue to keep our clients informed of any changes through our social media channels and email updates.

The key message at this stage is awareness, not alarm. By staying informed, remaining vigilant and practising good biosecurity, we can all play a role in protecting both our companion birds and Australia's unique wildlife.

If you have concerns about your bird's health, please contact us for advice before attending the clinic.
