Anaesthesia of a patient at Drovers Vet Hospital is something we place a lot of importance on. Last week we had a patient that showed just how important all parts of the anaeathetic are to a good outcome. In preparing for a spleen removal with a large mass, the team had set up a blood donor on standby. Appropriate pre-anaesthtic blood tests were done and an individualized premed given. During the anaesthetic all parameters are monitored and responses to any concerns can be immediate. It just so happened that our patient needed a blood transfusion and intra-operative medications to maintain heart rate and blood pressure. The monitoring and intervention does not stop after the surgery and here we can see our patient receiving monitoring and appropriate analgesia medications during the recovery phase. We are pleased to say that our patient has made a good recovery. So next time your pet has to undergo an anaesthetic - we know it is unsettling and an anxious experience for our fur baby owners - but know that our team are here with the latest tech, superb knowledge and are doing the best possible while they are in our hands.

Many would have heard by now of the impending Avian Influenza issue facing Australia. 2 cases have been confirmed in Western Australia and we therefore will need to put protocols in place at Veterinary Hospitals as to how we receive, handle, process consults with regards to pet birds/ backyard poultry and wildlife. As we put together these protocols and post them in the next few days, please can we ask that any avian visit to our hospital (Including injured wildlife birds) is preceded by a phone call so we can properly assess risk. In some cases you may be asked to wait in the car and be seen as a curb-side consult. We ask that everyone please remain patient and understanding as we navigate this. We want to continue to offer a high standard of care to all patients but at the same time doing this safely and in a responsible manner.

Dr Tammy and Dr Aimee doing some amazing work to repair a very delicate surgical fracture repair on a puppy this week. A lot of planning went into this to get the plate perfectly aligned between the top and bottom growth plates of the bone so as to not affect growth. The fracture also proved rather difficult as they had to avoid displacing the fragment but still ensuring it was held in place. The plate is a special locking plate that uses screws that lock into the plate (there is a thread on the screw head and in the hole of the plate). This allows very sturdy post-operative stability to allow the best bone healing.
