Appreciation post! (+ a little transparency on who I love working with 🐾)

As a dog trainer and behaviourist who works one-on-one with the general public, I’ll be honest — a full caseload of dream clients is rare. But recently I’ve had exactly that, and I’m feeling incredibly grateful.

Every one of my current training clients (and walkees!) — both human and canine — are what I’d call unicorns. Gorgeous Bowie šŸ“ø very much included!

So this is a shoutout to you all. You’re what keep me passionate not just about canine behaviour and training (that will never change); but working with and passing on my knowledge to as many loving fur parents as possible ā¤ļø.

ā“What makes a unicorn client? It’s a long list, but suffice to say… It’s in every little lightbulb moment. Every bit of buy in, that then builds on itself. And it’s seeing that spark in your eye when you notice these moments, and can’t wait to tell me about them.

I don’t care about benchmarks - I meet you and your dog exactly where you’re at. I care about progress.

And honestly, I care about pet parents who care about their canines. People who aren’t perfect, but are willing to do their best; not just to meet their own goals, but to do so through truly understanding their dog, developing their relationship and optimising their (mutual) wellbeing.

Some of these šŸ¦„ clients have extended to less frequent sessions now their biggest goals have been achieved. So if you might be one of my next unicorns, I’d love to hear from you! šŸ“©

Rambo may be nervous of strangers handling him initially, but is such a kind, gentle dog social young boy!

There may be some resource guarding tendencies, so I would advise feeding separately if in a multi dog household - which is good preventative protocol anyway ā˜ŗļø.

He’s looking for a new home. Currently being fostered by one of my lovely walkees 🄰🐾

These examples are just the tip of the iceberg. The truth about canine behaviour is often complex, and uncomfortable when we truly look at ourselves and the dogs in our care. But we have the resources now. I believe in us. See you on the other side šŸ˜‰šŸ¾ā¤ļø

Kali, my soul dog turned ten yesterday.

She remains ten months old in spirit, and in my heart. While many dogs contributed, it’s Kali that truly tipped the scales into my starting this business all those moons ago.

So, as a canine behaviour consultant and dog walker, this is how I celebrated my beloved’s tenth birthday.

Breakfast: we had a big morning planned, so stuck to her slow feeder bowl - a raw egg, tin of sardines, and some dog-safe leftovers (pasta, avocado, bonless chicken; a tiny bit of bacon). She also licked my breakfast bowl clean of yoghurt when I’d finished.

Next we visited my friend’s horses. Usually my dogs are tied in the hay shed with water and all the smells while I do horse things. But, Kali had never ā€œriddenā€ a horse before, and I believe birthdays are for new experiences - plus as a Border Collie owner, live in eternal persuit of new things for my canines! So after some thought and planning, and a successfully set stage (please enquire for all that went into this. The horse was carefully chosen and I was satisfied there was enough history between them, myself and the chosen location for all to go smoothly)... Kali rode her fist horse! She was a bit nervous, and leaned on her trust in me. I provided heavy physical and emotional support (and a couple of high value treats) while she worked out her positioning; then she found her point of balance! She held it without me for about five seconds; then I lifted her down (something we've practiced extensively), and my, we threw the biggest party! We danced with body and voice; she wiggle-wagged her whole body and tail, I showered her with ecstatic praise and we generally existed in mutual joy, love and play for a bit.

Then we went on a big nature walk in a quiet bush block with some of Kali's closest canine friends (her son Jarrah, and some of my long term walkees). Minimal input from me to her for this, and she remained off leash. This was her 45 minutes of "pure do***ng" - she sniffed all the scents in a place she hadn't been for a while; trotted ahead, circled back, initiated play with one of her friends, rolled in the sand.

After the drop off run, we were home and it was high time for my lunch break, and a big sleep on the couch for Kali. She was passed out a few hours and I left her to it. Then my humanness kicked in and I gave my pair their slightly overdue pawdicure and brush - just with higher value treats than usual, and for Kali her favourite brush. Another "joy party" when each dog was done. I ducked off to an evening training appointment, and by then my partner was home so she shared more couch naps with him.

Guilty admission - I am very busy, and do feed my dogs high quality kibble as part of their daily feed. Honestly, I believe this is fine as long as paired with "real" (unprocessed) food daily. But on her special day, no kibble for Kali! Her dinner was a big outdoor scatter feed in the thick grass, with finely chopped top tier 'dog log'.

More napping afterwards, then they were put out for last toilet break and settled in their "bedroom" (the laundry). But this night, I didn't just say "good dogs" and go to bed. This night I hunkered down by Kali, very close to her. She was a little confused, but rested her chin on my wrist and waited to see what would happen. I studied the gloss of her coat under her eye. I noticed the tiny hairs that twitched independently between her nose and shortest whiskers. She started to drift off. I watched every microexpression that passed over her face; studied the tiny movements of the smallest muscles in her ears, muzzle and eyes. I was truly present with her and sat with my love and appreciation of this dog who has given me so much.

Then I went to bed, satisfied I'd given my soul dog a good day.

ā¤ļøHow to show up for your dog on the Bad Days - Winter/Spring Specialā¤ļø

Most of my clients are amazing. They know the importance of enrichment and daily walks, and do their absolute best to meet their fur child’s needs.

And they’re human. Life happens. News flash: it’s okay to give yourself a day off when you need it! Self care and canine welfare don’t have to be mutually exclusive.

So here’s some ideas for the bad day:

🐾PREP:

- Put aside cardboard boxes from your online deliveries, and those paper bags from your cheeky takeout meals.

- When you finish your yoghurt, pop the container in the freezer

- When you buy carrots, pop a couple in the freezer (sweet potato off cuts too if your pup likes them! Soak in beef broth beforehand for extra flavour).

- Give yourself an extra couple days before pulling those weeds and mowing that lawn. *Avoid any chemicals, and do hit the weeds before grass seeds come out.

🐾THE BAD DAY:

1) Brekky: Put Fido’s food in treat toys, in boxes, in paper bags. Hide them through the house for him. Release him to his treasure hunt!

2) You get home from work: Grab a handful of treats and toss them one at a time in the tall weeds for Fido to find. Kick back with your drink of choice and cheer like you’ve just seen the best moment in sporting history each time he sniffs one out!

3) Dinner: Scatter Fido’s dinner all through that overgrown lawn! He has to pace the full area of lawn, nose working overtime to hoover up dindins.

4) Bed time - pull out that frozen carrot, frozen yogurt tin, or a cow hoof/long lasting, choke safe chew. Give it to Fido to fall asleep munching/licking. Chewing calms a dog’s body and sets them up for a deep, cozy sleep. 🄰

**All of these can and should be adjusted to your dog. First attempts should always be super easy, with gradually increasing difficulty. The goal is to create a challenge that’s just easy enough to avoid frustration šŸ™‚.

It hurts so much when they leave! The lovely Luna and her family have moved over east for a new job. Luna was very nervous of strangers and many novel things when we started walkies, after a rough start until finding her forever pawrents. It’s been so wonderful watching her come out of her shell over the months; even happily boarding with us during her pawrent’s move out process, which was just going to be too much with removalists, inspectors etc! And such a beautiful gift I received from her equally lovely fur-mum šŸ’ā¤ļø I hope you all come back soon, you’ll be missed!

We’re off on a remote trip away! I will have some starlink access for online enquiries and bookings, but will be without phone reception so unable to respond to texts or calls for long periods.

I’ll sign out with the third D, since it wasn’t covered in my last example. From building tolerance to alone time, to holding a sit for more than an instant; gradually building duration is a must in working with dogs!

In routine training of cues, working with a marker - like a clicker or ā€œyesā€ - is the quickest and easiest way to build this. Just remember, when you’re turning up the Duration be sure to turn down distance and distraction until you’ve established a new baseline.

I’ll leave it there for now! Happy training!

Do you know the three D’s of Dog Training? They can be applied in most behaviour modification plans too, and every dog owner should know them!

1) Distance 2) Distraction 3) Duration

All three need to be built individually, and incrementally! Trying to skip too many steps at once is very often where owners fall down. E.g. with recall, going straight from a quiet home to a busy dog park and wondering why Fido won’t come when you call! Before trying at the dog park, Fido must be able to show 100% recall success in gradually increasing distractions (build distance in a similar way):

-In the backyard with a stranger working a squeaky toy, throwing a ball or being a general lunatic

-in an empty, quiet but familiar public space

-in a familiar public space with a few far away distractions

-in a new environment

-in a new environment with on leash dogs and people nearby!

I hope this helps!🐾

Good girl Poppy 🄰 Rescue dogs can be hard, especially when anxiety driven behaviours get involved. While most fur parents understand it typically takes three months or more for dogs to become fully settled and acclimatised in a new home and family, even for top-tier adopters it’s a tricky and nuanced thing to judge when and how to transition from a decompression and adjustment focus, to that of training and behaviour modification - especially around fear related behaviours. The line between jumping the gun and complacency can be fine, and erring too far on either side can lead to hindered progress and unnecessary issues.

It was an absolute pleasure working with Poppy and her dedicated owner. They
made incredible headway, and I look forward to seeing their progress continue!

Hey! It’s time to book training NOW! ā¤ļøšŸ¾

We often hope that things won’t get ā€œbadā€. It’s just the puppy phase, or just the terrible teens. Then, when they do we hope they won’t get worse. Then, when they do we think ā€œthings are too far gone, can’t do anything about it now!ā€

These are all falsehoods. Hopefully, like Rubin’s committed owners you jump in while you fur baby is still a puppy and kick your behavioural goals while the going is easy, and everyone wins šŸŽ‰ But, I completely understand that life happens!

No matter how old your dog is, and no matter how far along (or behind) your training and behavioural journey is, I’m here to help! The time is NOW! 🐾
