Now that the 2026 foaling season has arrived, are you familiar with the 1️⃣-2️⃣-3️⃣ Rule of Foaling?

⏰ The first few hours of a newborn foal’s life is a critical time for both the mare and foal. Timing is crucial and this is when the 1-2-3 Rule of Foaling comes into play!

Within 1️⃣ hour, the foal should be standing.
Within 2️⃣ hours, the foal should be nursing.
Within 3️⃣ hours, the mare should have passed the placenta.

🚨 In most cases, these events happen quicker - so when should you call your vet?
☎️Call if the foal is not standing by 2️⃣ hours
☎️Call if the foal is not suckling by 4️⃣ hours
☎️Call if the placenta is not passed by 6️⃣ hours

🦷 A weekend of equine dentistry! 🐴

Last weekend, Drs Kirsten and Julia attended the Dental Vet Equine Dentistry Workshop, organised by Dr Kirsten Jackson — a world-renowned equine veterinary dentist who we are incredibly fortunate to have right here on our doorstep in WA.

The workshop was also facilitated by a fantastic group of local equine veterinary dentists — Dr James Meyer, Dr Tory Ko-Peternelj, Dr Tom Hamilton and Dr Clinton Float — bringing together attendees from across WA, the eastern states and even overseas.

Kirsten and Julia had a fantastic weekend, learning plenty, refining their techniques and adding some new skills to their equine dentistry toolkit. They’re looking forward to putting everything they learned into practice!

A huge thank you to Dr Kirsten Jackson and all of the facilitators for sharing their knowledge and expertise and putting together such a valuable event. We’re very lucky to have opportunities like this available here in WA. 🐴🦷

We couldn’t let August slip by without officially wishing our fantastic intern vet, Dr Julia, a very Happy Birthday! 🥳🎂

We celebrated Julia last week with a very delicious Black Forest gâteau — a big thank you to ESTHER'S BAKERY PERTH for keeping our birthday cake standards exceptionally high! 🍒🍫

Julia has been such a wonderful part of the Ascot Equine team, and we hope she had a fabulous birthday and felt very spoilt! 🐴💛

🎉 Happy Birthday, Emily! 🎂🐴

This week we celebrated the birthday of our wonderful Nurse Assistant, Emily! 🥳

Emily is currently studying through AVT on her way to becoming a qualified Veterinary Nurse — although there already doesn’t seem to be much she can’t do! From wrangling foals and confidently handling some of our more challenging patients, to turning her hand to just about any DIY job around the hospital, Emily is always happy to get stuck in. 💪🐴🔨

We’re very lucky to have her as part of the Ascot Equine team and love watching her skills grow as she works towards her nursing qualification.

We hope you had a fantastic birthday, Emily! 🎈🎂

🎨 Who knew we had so many Picassos on the team?! 👩‍🎨🧑‍🎨

Wow — what a night we had at our team event last Friday! There was plenty of laughter, a little creativity, and some seriously impressive hidden artistic talent on display. 🎨✨

A huge thank you to the wonderful Vienna from Pinot & Painting | Perth Mobile Sip & Paint for guiding us through such a fantastic evening. Who would have thought we could come together to create such an amazing canvas?! We absolutely love it and can’t wait to proudly display our team masterpiece at the hospital. 🖼️❤️

And a big thank you to the team at The Royal East Perth for their wonderful hospitality and for looking after us so well throughout the evening. 🥂

🎂 WHO WORE IT BETTER? Birthday edition! 🎂

We’ve had a couple of birthdays to celebrate at Ascot this week! 🥳

A very happy belated birthday to our lovely vet Dr Reina, who celebrated on Sunday, and our wonderful stablehand Ruby, whose birthday was yesterday! 🎉🐴

Of course, no birthday celebration is complete without cake… so today we made up for lost time with white chocolate AND milk chocolate mud cake. 🤍🍫

The only question left is… who wore it better? 😂
Team White Chocolate 🤍 or Team Chocolate 🤎?

Most importantly, a huge HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Ruby & Reina! 🥰 We hope you both had fabulous birthdays and felt very spoilt. We’re so lucky to have you both as part of the Ascot team! ❤️🐴

💛 Farewell Dr Evie! 💛

After six wonderful months with the Ascot Equine Vets team, we’re sadly saying goodbye to Dr Evie as she heads back to the eastern states for her next chapter.

It has been an absolute pleasure having Evie as part of our team. Her kindness, dedication and care for her patients have made her a much-loved member of the Ascot family, and we know many of our clients will be sad to see her go too.

Evie, thank you for everything you’ve brought to Ascot over the past six months. We’ll miss having you around and wish you every happiness and success for this next adventure.
