We often hear these questions from pet owners:

❓ Can arthritis be cured?
Unfortunately, arthritis cannot be cured; however, it can often be managed very successfully with regular visits and finding a routine that works for you and your pet.

❓ How do I know if my pet is in pain?
Look for signs such as stiffness, reluctance to jump, changes in activity levels, altered behaviour, or difficulty getting up. (Check out our previous posts this month! 😛)

❓ Will my pet need medication forever?
Every pet is different. Treatment plans are tailored to each individual’s needs and may change over time. Ultimately, it is highly likely your fur baby will require life long management; we will be with you every step of the way to support you in this 💜

❓ Can weight affect arthritis?
Absolutely. Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress on joints. Give us a call for free advice based on your pets personal circumstances. Alternatively, have a chat with one of our vets at your pets next health check 💜

❓ When should I see a vet?

🐾 Arthritis & Exercise: Finding the Balance 🐾

When pets develop arthritis, it can be tempting to reduce their activity completely. However, regular, gentle exercise is one of the best ways to help maintain joint mobility, muscle strength, and overall wellbeing.

✅ Short, frequent walks are often better than one long walk.
✅ Allow your pet to set the pace and take breaks when needed.
✅ Swimming and hydrotherapy can provide excellent low-impact exercise for some dogs.
✅ Avoid high-impact activities such as jumping, chasing balls repeatedly, or running on slippery surfaces.
✅ Keep exercise consistent rather than doing lots on some days and very little on others.

Watch for signs that your pet may have overdone it, such as increased stiffness, limping, reluctance to move, or excessive tiredness later in the day.

🐾 June is Arthritis & Joint Health Awareness Month 🐾

As our pets age, changes in their joints can affect their comfort, mobility and quality of life.

Did you know that arthritis is one of the most common chronic conditions seen in older dogs and cats? The challenge is that many pets are very good at hiding pain, meaning the signs can be easy to miss.

Some signs to watch for include:

🐶 Difficulty getting up after resting
🐱 Reluctance to jump onto furniture
🐾 Stiffness, especially in the morning
🐾 Slower walks or reduced activity
🐾 Difficulty climbing stairs
🐾 Changes in behaviour or mood
🐾 Limping or favouring a leg
🐾 Increased sleeping or resting

Many owners assume these changes are simply “old age”, but they may actually be signs of discomfort that can be managed.

Throughout June we’ll be sharing tips on recognising arthritis, supporting joint health, and helping your pet stay comfortable and active.
