Whether it is a much loved retired horse or a top competition horse, they will not be getting the most out of their feed or reaching their full potential if they are in pain. Regular preventative dentistry is essential to treat or prevent pain. With a portable crush and the use of systemic and local pain relief when needed, your horse will always be comfortable and more serious dental conditions can often be prevented.

Spring has sprung at Dental Vet! And while we all look forward to the season changing, we also need to be aware of changes in our horses.

If you haven't performed an FEC since Autumn now would be a great time to have your horse tested before administering any wormers.

Spring is also a high risk period for horses with Equine metabolic syndrome (EMS). If you've observed sudden weight changes, lameness, or other concerning symptoms, we recommend booking a consultation to discuss further diagnostics.

Great second day of our dentistry course today! So inspiring seeing so many vets so passionate and really wanting to further their education to be able to better help their patients! We had blind and normal wolf teeth extractions, nerve blocks, vital pulpotomies, radiology, periodontal disease treatments, as well as of course our thorough oral examinations, ageing and odontoplasty.

A huge thank you again to our wonderful sponsors- Bec from put on an incredible spread for morning/ afternoon tea and lunch (delicious!), Tim from supplied all the equipment and was running around making sure everyone had what they needed! ATX Medical Solutions let us play with their very cool new Poskom AirRay (so light!) and .australia have also been an amazing help. We are so grateful for their support, we couldn't run these courses without them!

Such a wonderful group of dedicated, motivated vets and students, our horses are in great hands!

Great first day of our dentistry course today with a very full day of lectures! So wonderful seeing so many vets so passionate about dentistry and so keen to learn more!

I was also really pleasantly surprised and impressed by the knowledge of the participants. In similar lectures 5-10 years ago, there were blank faces when we would ask about the anatomy and common pathology. Today there was so much that was already well known and understood by most participants which was so great to see! Vets are really embracing this incredibly important aspect of equine care.

We have been very busy at the clinic getting everything ready and tidy for the course next weekend! I just wanted to give a huge shout out and Thank you! to Steve Erceg who owns/ runs .paddock and .kiosk! After spending 2 days hand shovelling and wheelbarrowing our leaf pile (while listening to the bobcat working hard next door), and realising it was probably another 2 days of shovelling ahead of me, I asked Steve whether there was any chance he could pop over with his bobcat to give me a hand!

Half an hour later he was there and in 15 mins had done what would have taken me 2 days! He wouldn't accept any payment (although a carton of beer may have mysteriously appeared at the Cubby Kiosk the next day...) and was just happy to help!

I can highly recommend the Cubby Kiosk, I went there a few weeks ago with the kids planning to spend maybe an hour there... 3 hours later I was dragging the kids away! If you are at the clinic and need a coffee or a bite to eat, it's a lovely place to go. 😊

For those that have been following along the last 2 days, the answer is finally here!

So yes, the very subtle sign of a very serious problem was just that the protective layer over 2 of the pulp cavities was a little abnormal. These pulps are around 1mm x 5mm, and we need to check over 140 of these in every mouth! Which is why a thorough oral examination, with a light/ mirror (or endoscope!) in a still patient by a knowledgeable veterinarian is essential for every dental appointment.

The first photo shows the rotten feed material packed into the pulp canal (where the blood vessels and nerves should be!), the second photo shows an endodontic file in the exit hole where the pus and infection was leaving the tooth, travelling down the draining tract (area without periodontal attachment- arrows) and dripping into his mouth. And was this painful- absolutely- as can be seen by the photo on Wednesday with the right side of his mouth (left side of the photo!) being much more stained by the food- as he was chewing preferentially on that side to avoid this painful tooth.😢

Signs of a very serious problem can be very subtle which is why having someone knowledgeable and thorough as your dental provider is essential to make sure these signs are picked up. We can't treat what we don't diagnose and we can't diagnose without a thorough oral examination (and many years of education and training!).

Clue number 2 from yesterday's post! On his routine dental examination, we noticed this on the grinding surface of his 207 (second cheek tooth back on his near side). Can anyone see anything unusual here?
