As we experience freezing temperatures at night, I want to say again that dogs belong inside with their families, not alone in the backyard.

Every evening, I walk my own dogs. Too often, I hear other dogs barking in the darkness - not the excited bark of a happy dog , but the persistent bark of an animal that is cold, lonely and separated from the people it loves.

It breaks my heart.

Dogs are social animals and form deep emotional bonds with their human families. Yet heartbreakingly, even in 2026, many are still exposed to freezing winter nights alone outside in the cold, howling wind and rain.

This week, RSPCA WA revealed it has already received 128 cruelty reports relating to inadequate shelter since 1 May, a seven per cent increase on last year, which is absolutely shocking.

The cases are confronting. A German Shepherd confined to a narrow side passage with only an air-conditioning unit overhang for shelter. Another dog living in a wire enclosure exposed to the elements with just a flimsy tarp overhead. Other dogs with no shelter from the rain.

If a dog is part of your family, treat them like family. Bring them inside. Give them a warm bed, away from draughts. Ensure they have comfort, companionship and protection from the weather.

A kennel is not a substitute for a family, so as we rug up and head indoors this winter, let's make sure our companion animals are brought inside too.

If you see an animal without adequate shelter from the cold, wind or rain, report it to RSPCA WA's Cruelty Hotline on 1300 CRUELTY (1300 278 358).

And if you're tired of animals being treated as an afterthought in government decision-making, please sign the Animal Justice Party WA petition to establish an Independent Office of Animal Protection in Western Australia. Animals deserve an independent voice fighting for their interests every single day.

Finally, please share this post to spread the message that dogs deserve to be inside, in the warm, at night - every night.

🌟 Restraining Dogs in Cars: A Quick Safety Reminder 🌟

We all love seeing our dogs ride along on adventures, but how they travel matters just as much as where you are going. πŸš—πŸΆ

πŸ”΄ Unrestrained dogs in vehicles can:

πŸ”ΉBe seriously injured in sudden stops or accidents
πŸ”ΉDistract the driver, increasing crash risk
πŸ”ΉBecome a projectile inside the car, putting everyone at risk

Even a short trip to the park or vet can be dangerous without proper restraint.

πŸ”΅ Safe travel options include:
βœ” Crash-tested harnesses secured to seatbelts
βœ” Well-ventilated travel crates secured in the vehicle
βœ” Boot barriers for larger dogs, combined with secure crates where possible

A dog sitting on a lap, roaming the back seat or hanging out of windows might look harmless, but it is not safe for them or you.
If your pet is not yet comfortable with restraints, start with short positive trips and reward calm behaviour to help them adjust.

At Perth Vet Emergency, we often see preventable injuries from road accidents involving unrestrained pets. A few minutes of preparation can make all the difference.

Stay safe on the road, for you and your best mate. πŸΎπŸ’ž

With damaging winds, heavy rain and severe weather forecast across Perth and surrounding areas this weekend, now is the time to make sure your furbabies are safe and secure at home.

Here are some important reminders for pet owners:

🐢 Keep pets indoors where possible
Strong winds, loud weather and flying debris can be extremely stressful and dangerous for animals.

🏑 Check fences and gates
Wild weather can loosen panels, blow gates open and create escape risks for anxious pets.

⚑ Prepare for storm anxiety
Many dogs become frightened during storms and high winds. Create a calm, safe space inside with blankets, toys and comfort items.

πŸ’§ Avoid flooded areas & large puddles
Flood water can hide hazards, sharp debris and bacteria. Keep walks short and safe over the weekend.

🐾 Dry paws & coats properly
Cold, wet pets can become uncomfortable quickly β€” especially puppies, seniors and smaller breeds.

πŸ”‹ Be prepared for power outages
Have fresh water, food, medications and torches ready in case conditions worsen.

Please stay safe this weekend and keep an extra eye on your FurBabies πŸ’›

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned Perth could experience damaging winds and heavy rainfall over the WA Day long weekend.

Watching my dogs stumble, sniff, explore, and sometimes make a mess reminds me that none of it diminishes the love I feel for them. Raising a dog isn’t about perfect tricks, flawless behavior, or picture-perfect days it’s about filling every moment of their life with warmth, safety, and unconditional affection. Seeing them curl up beside me, tail wagging and eyes full of trust, I know they feel it too, understanding that they are cherished beyond words. In that simple, messy, and beautiful truth lies a quiet, overflowing joy that makes every effort and every sacrifice completely worthwhile. 🐢

The bond between humans and dogs goes beyond companionship it has real emotional and psychological benefits. Studies show that nurturing pets can reduce stress, boost happiness, and strengthen emotional resilience. Each shared moment reinforces the power of love, trust, and connection, making the daily joys and challenges of pet parenting a profoundly rewarding experience.
