Mantrailing Central West: Mantrailing for pet dogs

Mantrailing Central West: Mantrailing for pet dogs Mantrailing is a sport teaching dogs to find people by following their unique scent trail. ๐Ÿพ What is Mantrailing? Great fun for all dogs!

Mantrailing is an exciting new fun sport where dogs are trained to locate people by tracking their unique scent. Since all dogs have an innate hunting instinct, this activity allows them to channel that drive in a safe, structured, and productive manner. Great for confidence-building in fearful or โ€˜reactiveโ€™ dogs. โ€‹Perfect as a fun retirement activity for ex-sporting dogs. No prior obedience training or handling experience is necessary.

You know that feeling when a Mantrailing session is going brilliantly? Your dog is working well, the trails are going to plan, and you're on cloud nine ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿฅณ

So you think: 'Just one more trail...'

But is that what you dog needs? Or just what you want? ๐Ÿค”

We've just written a new blog looking at why breaks between trails are so important, and how you can carefully introduce taking breaks during a trail as part of your training plan. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Lovely to catch up with old friends at our Mantrailing session yesterday. Seasoned trailer Winston brought his new brother Wallace for his first trail and heโ€™s a natural! Also fabulous to see Daphne and Digby who catch up regularly when they return to the area to visit family. We even started some fun tracking with Digby yesterdayโ€ฆA huge thank you to the best MT Assistant and trail layer extraordinaire Allyson as well! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

If we want to create a motivated Mantrailing dog, we need to think beyond simply teaching them the game...

Motivation comes from making the game VALUABLE to them.

And when we get the training right, we can create a dog that doesn't just follow the scent, but actively wants to prioritise it.

In a nutshell, here's a simple formula to achieve this ๐Ÿ‘‡

Create drive through success
+
Create focus through your reward system
=
A motivated dog that prioritises the game of Mantrailing.

Think being a Trail Layer is just about walking away, hiding and waiting to be found?

Think again...๐Ÿ‘€

The Trail Layer plays a much bigger role in Mantrailing than you might realise.

From creating and storing the scent article correctly, to firing the dog up, following instructions, hiding appropriately and partying with the dog at the end, every part of the role can impact their training experience.

Check out our new blog that explains why Trail Layers are such an important part of Mantrailing training and what you need to consider when taking on the role ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ’กYour dog might be following more than just scent...

When you know where the Trail Layer has gone, it's surprisingly easy to influence your dog without even realising it.

A look towards a direction. A change in your body position. A shift in your movement. Even subtle changes in your line handling can give your dog information from you about where they should or shouldn't go.

Check out our new blog taking a look at 4 signs your dog may be over-relying on you during Mantrailing, including one that might make you question what you actually consider to be an 'accurate' trail. ๐Ÿ‘‡
