During Springtime, it is not uncommon to come across baby Magpies and other native birds. Unfortunately, even with good intentions, people mistakenly believe that a baby bird on the ground is in need of “rescuing” when, realistically, that’s often not the case. Recently, a number of fledgling Magpies have been handed into the clinic even though they were actually in perfect health. Fledgling birds are learning to fly and naturally spend a lot of time on the ground while their parents continue to feed them and protect them. Even when a baby bird may appear to have been “abandoned”, it is crucial to not interfere unless the baby is in direct danger e.g traffic or predators, or obviously injured. Patience is really crucial here. Observing from a distance is a good idea. Most of the time, the parents are nearby. Give them time. Sadly, if there is no viable way to return a baby to its family, it will need to spend months in captivity before it can successfully be released to survive independently in the wild. Below is a handy flow chart from The Magpie Whisperer that can help you know when is the right time, if any, to intervene 🐦‍⬛🖤

Edit: thank you all, we have now got enough 🥰

We are after some doonas or large, thick blankets for use in our hospital. If anyone has any they were going to throw away, we would appreciate the donation. We have more than enough sheets, towels and small blankets for now. Many thanks 🐾❤️
