Introducing our newest nurse to the NVC team, Belana! 🩵 Belana has fitted seamlessly into our clinic, and her bright, bubbly personality has already made her such a wonderful addition to our nursing team.

“I’ve always had a huge love for animals, so becoming a Veterinary Nurse felt like a natural fit for me. I completed my Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing at the Australian College of Applied Animal Studies in 2024, with a special interest in Equine Nursing and Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Nursing. I have gained five years of clinical experience across general practice, emergency and critical care, and specialist hospitals, where I discovered a strong passion for working in small animal Emergency and Critical Care. I love the fast-paced environment that ECC brings, as well as being able to provide my patients with the highest quality of care when they need it most. I recently made the big move over from my hometown just outside of Gippsland, Victoria, bringing my two favourite companions along for the adventure — my cat, Hermione, and my horse, Albany. Back home, I have my retired horse, Storm, who was my 14th birthday present from my parents and my very first horse, as well as our family dogs, Marley, a Border Collie x Kelpie, and Penny, a West Highland White Terrier.

When I’m not at work (a rare occurrence, haha!), you’ll most likely find me riding or at a competition with Albany, baking my next sourdough creation, reading a new book, or testing out new cocktail recipes while singing along to Taylor Swift.

I’m so excited to have joined the Northfield Veterinary Clinic team and to be part of such a warm and supportive clinic. I’m looking forward to getting to know all of our wonderful clients and their furry family members, and helping make their visits to the clinic as comfortable and positive as possible!”

We’re so excited for our lovely clients to get to know Belana soon! Please help us in welcoming her in the comments below. 🥰

🦷 Retained Puppy Teeth – When should you be concerned? 🦷

Just like children, puppies lose their baby (deciduous) teeth as their adult teeth come through. Most puppies will have all their adult teeth by around 5-6 months of age.

Sometimes, baby teeth don’t naturally fall out when they should. This is called a retained deciduous tooth. When both the baby and adult tooth are present at the same time, it can lead to:
🐾 Crowding of teeth
🐾 Misalignment of the adult teeth
🐾 Discomfort or difficulty chewing
🐾 Tartar build-up and gum disease

The adorable pup recently visited us with 2 retained baby canine teeth and required surgical extraction under a general anaesthetic to prevent future dental problems and allow the adult teeth to sit correctly.

Retained teeth are particularly common in smaller breed dogs, so if your puppy is over 6 months old and still has baby teeth present, it’s worth having them checked by your vet. This can all be done under the one anaesthetic at the same time as their desexing!

If you’re unsure whether your puppy’s teeth are developing normally, our team would be happy to take a look! Please call us on 08 8262 6325, or book online today. 🩵

🌈🐾 Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day 🐾🌈

Today, we remember the pets who may no longer be by our side, but will always hold a special place in our hearts. ❤️

Our beloved pets leave paw prints on our lives that never truly fade. We carry their memories, their little quirks, their favourite things, and all the love they gave us, long after we’ve had to say goodbye.

Today, we invite you to share a photo of your precious pet who has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Tell us their name, share a favourite memory, and let’s fill our feed with the beautiful lives that touched ours. 🌈🐶🐱🐦🐰🐾

Always loved.
Always remembered.
Forever part of our family.
Forever watching over us from above. ❤️🌈

Until we meet again. 🐾

🦷 Keeping your pet’s teeth healthy doesn’t have to be complicated! 🐶🐱

With so many dental products available, look for the VOHC seal — products with this seal have been independently tested to help control plaque and tartar. ✅

At NVC, our favourites include:
🦷 Hill’s T/D – clinically proven to reduce plaque, tartar and gingivitis.
🌿 Simply Seaweed – an easy-to-use, Australian-made powder to support oral health and fresher breath.
🦴 VeggieDent – VOHC-approved chews that help reduce plaque and tartar while supporting healthy gums.

Not sure what’s best for your pet? Ask our team! We’re always happy to help! 💚🐾

What is Periodontal Disease? 🦷
It all starts with plaque, a sticky, invisible layer of bacteria which forms on your pet’s teeth and under the gumline. If not removed, this plaque hardens into tartar, leading to inflammation of the gums known as gingivitis, the earliest stage of dental disease.

The good news is gingivitis is both preventable and reversible when caught early 👏 If left untreated, the inflammation continues to worsen, causing damage to the teeth, gums, and the bone structure that supports them. This is periodontal disease, and by this stage, your pet may unfortunately need teeth extracted. Dental disease doesn’t just affect the mouth. It can impact your pet’s overall health, including vital organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys.

Prevention is everything!
