Our goal is to get our cats ready for a wonderful long and safe life and to think that these same cats could be dumped is heartbreaking. If you are in a position in which you can’t look after your cat anymore, always reach out to the place you adopted from. We will always take our cats back. They will always be part of our family.
Yesterday we were contacted after one of our recently adopted cats was found wandering on the streets.
This little man had already been rescued once. He should never have found himself in that situation again. It is simply not acceptable.
What makes this even more upsetting is that he was only adopted in April. Within such a short period of time, he somehow found himself on the streets, alone and vulnerable.
When contact was made with the adopter, she advised that the cat had been given away. Even more concerning, the adopter stated they did not have the name, address, or contact details of the person the cat was given to.
This is exactly why our adoption agreements require adopters to contact Hunter Valley Cat Haven if they can no longer care for one of our cats. The agreement also clearly states that cats are not to be abandoned, sold, given away, or otherwise disposed of without our involvement.
Our adoption contracts are not just pieces of paper. They exist to protect the welfare and safety of the cats we rescue. Every cat that comes into our care receives veterinary treatment, rehabilitation, and countless hours of love, care and dedication before being matched with what we hope will be a forever home.
This beautiful, affectionate boy absolutely adores people. The thought of him being out on the streets is heartbreaking to us all, especially his foster carer, who invested so much time, love and effort into preparing him for his new life. Knowing that he somehow ended up back in a similar situation he was rescued from is difficult to comprehend.
To learn that a cat has been passed on without our knowledge, with no record of where he went, and ultimately found back on the streets is heartbreaking. These kittens have already experienced uncertainty and hardship. They deserve stability, safety and responsible care.
We are incredibly grateful that he was found safe and that we were contacted. His welfare remains our priority and he is now back where he will be cared for and protected.
This situation serves as an important reminder that if circumstances change, please contact your rescue. We would much rather take a cat back into our care or help with Assisted Adoption than see it passed from home to home, abandoned, or left vulnerable on the streets.
Our commitment to our cats does not end at adoption, and we expect those who adopt from us to honour the commitments they agreed to when welcoming one of our rescued cats into their family.
