Primary pulmonary neoplasia represents about 1% of canine cancers, and this recently published paper highlights an unusual case of peri-oesophageal metastases of pulmonary adenocarcinoma presenting as dysphagia in a dog.

Vetnostics anatomic veterinary pathologist Dr Alex Teh collaborated closely with the referring clinician Dr Jess Beattie and the team at Vet Hospital, to work through this challenging case demonstrating the value of close cooperation between veterinary clinicians and pathologists in advancing veterinary knowledge.

The accompanying image shows the pulmonary adenocarcinoma in A and B, and the peri-oesophageal metastatic nodules in C and D.

From normal to malignant. This comparison demonstrates normal melanin-containing cells within the stratum basale of the epidermis (top) versus malignant melanoma (bottom), where cells exhibit marked nuclear atypia and pleomorphism.

Whilst some melanomas are readily recognised such as the one pictured, others can be deceptively challenging to diagnose, with significant variation in their appearance and degree of pigmentation. Careful histopathological assessment is often required to distinguish melanoma from other tumour types and accurately determine malignant potential.

Malignant melanomas can exhibit clinically aggressive behaviour and may carry metastatic potential, particularly to the lymph nodes and lungs.

Carl was a co-founder of ASAP Laboratory, now known as Vetnostics Victoria, and he has returned after completing further study in biodiversity alongside work with Agriculture Victoria. Carl's areas of special interest include cytology, haematology and wildlife conservation. A big welcome to Carl!

Did you know you could get sick from algae?
Vetnostics board certified anatomic pathologist Dr. Alex Teh DACVP recently diagnosed a rare case of protothecosis in a cat that presented for erythematous, ulcerative lesions on the left front paw pads that has been ongoing for longer than one year. Prototheca is an algal organism and is widely found in organic matter and fresh and marine waters. It is known to infect both humans and animals. It is thought that protothecosis is an opportunistic infection because it is widely distributed in the environment, yet disease is rare.

Under the microscope, Prototheca often have characteristic wedge-shaped or floret-like arrangements (green circles in the images). These are the endospores formed by the parent sporangia. Using special histochemical stains such as Gomori’s methenamine silver (GMS) and Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), these algae readily stain black and dark purple respectively.
