🐾 Tortie Tuesday 🐾
Did you know? Most tortoiseshell cats are female!
The beautiful tortie pattern is created by a unique combination of black-based and red-based colour genes, which are carried on the X chromosome. Because females have two X chromosomes (XX), they can display both colours, creating the stunning patchwork coat that torties are famous for.
Male torties do exist, but they’re incredibly rare—around 1 in 3,000—and usually have an extra chromosome (XXY).
No two torties are ever exactly alike, making each one a true work of art. 🎨🧡🖤
