Managing a reactive dog isn’t just training, it’s nervous system labour. Yours and theirs.

Scanning the environment before you’ve even left the driveway. Recalculating routes mid-walk. Holding it together when a ‘friendly’ off-lead dog bounds over anyway.

That takes real capacity.

Understanding ‘Under threshold’

One of the most important concepts in force-free training.

When a dog is over threshold, their nervous system shifts into stress mode and their ability to learn basically shuts down. They become too flooded to process new information, no matter how many treats are on offer.

Under threshold means keeping the environment manageable enough that the dog stays calm and engaged, which is when real learning happens. ✹

Some exciting news! đŸŸâœš

I am now working alongside Dog Rescue Newcastle and North Shore Dog Rescue, volunteering behaviour coaching and training support for foster dogs and the carers who look after them. 💙

Foster dogs arrive with all sorts of history. Some are unsure of new people, some have never lived in a house before and are just in need a little extra help.

I am now working alongside foster carers to provide force-free, relationship-first training, built around what each dog needs.

Sometimes that’s toilet training and settling into a house. Sometimes it’s helping a dog who finds the world a bit much and learn that people are safe. Sometimes it’s just giving a carer a plan and a bit of reassurance that they’re on the right track.

So excited and grateful for the opportunity to help these dogs settle, build confidence, and be ready for the family that’s waiting for them. đŸ«¶đŸŒ

Every lip lick, yawn, vocalisation and turned head is your dog trying to tell you something.

Learning to read those signals isn’t advanced dog training, it’s the foundation of it.

Body language is how you catch stress before it becomes reactivity, how you keep everyone safe and how you build the kind of trust where your dog knows you’re actually listening.

The more fluent you become in their language, the less they ever have to shout to be heard. 💜

Friendly reminder that your dog isn’t being ‘needy’

That paw on your leg.
That check-in glance mid-walk.
That need to be near you in a new environment.

It’s not weakness, it’s a survival strategy that’s kept social species alive for a very long time.

So next time your dog leans into you, let them. You’re not creating a ‘needy’ or ‘clingy’ dog.

You’re being exactly what their nervous system needs you to be: S A F E

Throwing our reactive dogs into busy, loud and overwhelming environment isn’t exposure therapy. It’s just stress and fear.

Here’s the thing about reactivity, your dog’s nervous system needs to feel safe before it can learn anything new and when they’re constantly over threshold, scanning, barking and lunging, they’re in survival mode.

Improvement CANNOT happen when there is constant overwhelm.

Real progress with reactivity happens in the quiet moments. The controlled setups and the distances that feel almost too easy for you and your dog.

Flooding a reactive dog with the thing that overwhelms them doesn’t build resilience or improve the behaviour.

It builds a dog who is exhausted and on edge.

When someone is tired or having a bad day, we very often give them the benefit of the doubt. We think: “They’re just hav...

When someone is tired or having a bad day, we very often give them the benefit of the doubt.

We think:

“They’re just having a bad day”
“They’re going through something”

Our dogs deserve the same benefit of the doubt.

+ not everyday will be win and that’s okay.

Learn from it and use it to improve your skill set. đŸ€Ž
