🐎 We’re introducing two spelling options at Newbrook Estate

Following on from our recent post about how horses naturally change when they go out on spell, we wanted to share an update to how we offer our spelling agistment.

Over time, we’ve seen just how differently horses respond to time off. Some horses are only here for a short spell where maintaining muscle and topline is important, while others transition into a longer spell or retirement where a grass-based lifestyle suits them perfectly.

Because of this, we’ve decided to introduce two different spelling models, giving owners the option to decide what best suits their horse:

🌿 Grass-Only Spelling
For horses who do well living naturally on pasture. Ideal for longer spells, let-down periods, or retirement. This replicates our current spelling model where our perennial paddocks provide the abundance of grass feed for the herd.

Includes:
• Large paddock living in a herd environment
• Access to pasture and water
• Daily checks
• A low-stress, natural lifestyle with plenty of movement

🌾 Supported Spelling
For horses who benefit from additional nutrition to help maintain muscle and overall condition during their spell. Particularly suited to shorter spells, those wanting to maintain topline, horses with joint issues or horses with higher nutritional needs.

Includes:
• Everything in Grass-Only Spelling
• Daily hard feed provided by us (high-calorie, balanced diet)
• Rugging as required (no responsibility accepted for damage to rugs)
• Routine worming
• Farrier trims arranged and managed by us

Both spelling options exclude equine dentistry, veterinary, handling fees outside of farrier trims.

Both options still provide what we believe is most important — space to move, herd interaction, and a low-stress environment where horses can truly switch off and be horses.

If you’re unsure which option would suit your horse best, we’re always happy to chat and help guide you.

We will be reaching out to our current spellers owners about these changes and for renewed contracts requirements for insurance purposes so please keep your eye out for some communication in the next few days

Cyclone Narelle 🌀

I'm sure everyone has been keeping an eye on the weather forecast for the next few days, where Tropical Cyclone Narelle is tracking to make her path from the North West of WA through to Perth by Sunday

Luckily... as a previous resident of Karratha and having had horses go through Category 3 cyclonces, we are experienced to deal with such weather conditions

Our spellers are in the best position possible!

Which is in a large paddock, with freedom to move around and shield themselves from the wind, with nothing on them that could potentially get caught on anything

Unless people have Cyclone rated infrastructure, the best thing for flight animals, is to give them the space and freedom to do what their instincts tell them to do

We will be keeping a close eye on the forecast and an even closer eye on our guys over the coming few days as Narelle makes her way South, where hopefully it is no worse than a winters storm 🤞

Vale Billy 🕊

When we rescued Billy last May, we always knew we were on borrowed time with him, and yet somehow I still wasnt prepared for today

With years of neglect and nearing mid-30s, we battled so hard to give Billy the extra time he managed to have

An abundance of luscious grass, mushy high calorie hard feeds to try and help him maintain or gain some weight, and yet his body just continued to deplete infront of us

Albeit, there wasnt a day that Billy was in pain, or wasnt full of energy running around with the big guys and living his absolute best life

He regained his trust in humans and was doted on in ways he probably never experienced

Despite seeing Billy munching away as usual this morning, we sadly came home to find Billy lying down and unable to get back up

It was time. And he was letting us know that we can let him go.

Our amazing Augie from Perth Equine Hospital came out and we said our goodbyes to our beautiful Billy 🕊

He wasnt with us for long but he definitely left a significant mark on our hearts ❤️

Til' we meet again my Billy Boy 💔

🐴 What changes can you expect when your horse goes out on spell or retires to pasture-based agistment?

Before we lived on our 52 acres here, we lived on much smaller acreage and I had only ever sent a horse out on spell once — my gelding Ollie for about 6 weeks.

When I went to pick him up and saw the changes in his body, I’ll be honest… I panicked a little. He didn’t look like the horse I dropped off. His topline had softened, his body shape had changed, and he looked quite different from the horse he was when he went out.

Then I stopped and really thought about it.

Of course his body had changed — that’s exactly what it’s supposed to do.

Without hard feed and regular work, a horse’s body naturally adjusts. In many ways it’s not that different to us. If we suddenly stopped going to the gym and changed our diet, our bodies would change too.

It’s actually really interesting watching horses go out on spell or move into retirement and seeing them revert to a more natural way of living. Every horse adapts a little differently.

Some horses seem to get rounder and rounder and look like they gain weight just from looking at grass 🌱
Others lose topline more quickly once the work and higher-energy diet needed to maintain that muscle is removed 🐎

But what they all gain is a more enriched lifestyle.

Living out in a herd environment, horses often become far more relaxed. Stress and anxieties drop and they spend their days doing the things horses are meant to do — grazing for most of the day, rolling often, wandering the paddocks and socialising with their herd.

With that in mind, we also recognise that every horse is different. Some horses are only here for a short spell where maintaining muscle and topline is important, while others transition into a longer spell or retirement, where a pasture-based lifestyle suits them perfectly.

Because of this, we’re working to introduce two different spelling models, giving owners the option to decide what best suits their horse.

Keep an eye out later this week for a post explaining our updated spelling options and what they include 🥰

2 years ✨️

Yesterday it marked 2 years since we moved into our new home and not a day goes by where I don't love every minute we spend here

Countless hours spent cleaning up the mess that was left, redoing fences, adding new infrastructure amidst also working and handling the manic life of parenthood and property life

We have loved sharing our property with some beautiful spellers and retirees and are so grateful of everyone that supports us

Our little corner of the world is pretty awesome 😍

We will be sharing an update on spelling this week so keep your eyes out for a couple of changes coming 🥰

Big Blue went off for her annual detail and paint treatment with Equi Glow! 💙

At almost 4 years old - she looks brand new again ready for the years adventures!

Being time poor also means knowing when to outsource things on the to-do list; and this job is always one that I am more than happy to outsource to the people that know it best 👌

She's a big rig, and it's no lie that detailing internally and externally, plus the paint treatment, is a labour intensive job.

You have to know the right products and right tools - so sending it to the experts is an easy choice 😉

Big Blue is now sparkling clean and the paint feels amazing 💙

Merry Christmas from all of us here 🎄❤️

We hope everyone has had a lovely day with family and friends

Our residents have been spoilt with carrots and equi-restore for a special Christmas treat and replenishment on a 42 degree day 🌞

Our thoughts are with everyone in Cowalla amidst a current bushfire threat where there are incredible emergency services combating the fire from the ground and above - a reminder of how incredible these people truly are ❤️
