Happy Lump Day! 🐴🎀

Although seriously… it feels like hump day. Is anyone else still getting absolutely knocked around by the daylight-saving changeover? I feel like I’m running an hour late ALL DAY. 😂

Anyway… back to the lump!

This rather impressive lump turned out to be a giant cell tumour of soft tissue origin, sitting right over the stifle joint. These tumours are rare, but they can be locally aggressive — so getting good margins was important.

After wide-margin surgery, plenty of time and dedication from his owners, and more than a few tie-over bandages… he is cancer free! 🎉

And really, if you have to spend your recovery wearing a bandage, you may as well have it tied in a bow. 🎀😂

A very happy ending to a very lumpy story.

This is Parker 👋🐮

Parker’s horn had taken an unexpected left turn… and was heading straight for his face. 😬

Luckily for Parker, a little horn trim was exactly what the doctor ordered! 🩺

He was safely restrained for his safety and mine, and with a bit of gigli wire magic, we were able to take the pressure off and get that horn pointing in a much more sensible direction.

Sometimes in life you need to change direction… Parker just needed a little help with his. 😂🐮

Yes! This is a foot abscess 🐴🦶

See that little black area tracking around the nail? That’s air sitting within the abscess tract. When an abscess is associated with a nail, you might hear it called a “hot nail.” 🔥🔨

Now, we don’t routinely X-ray every foot abscess — but sometimes an X-ray gives us a whole lot more information than just where the sore spot is.

In this case, we can also see that this horse has low pedal bone angles and a medial/lateral foot imbalance.

And that information is GOLD for the whole care team. 🩻✨ These X-rays give us a map to work from so the vet, farrier and owner can make a plan to improve the foot balance going forward.

Because unfortunately… we don’t have X-ray vision! 👀😂

It takes a team to keep these guys comfortable, sound and performing at their absolute best. 💪🐎

🕵️ Can you see the cause of lameness in this foot?

There’s something on these X-rays that gives us a pretty good clue about why this horse is sore… 👀🐴

A few hints:

⚪ Metal shows up white on X-ray
⚫ Air shows up black
🐴 And this problem is SUPER common

🎶 Guess who’s back… back again?
Tom is back…

…I had you there, didn’t I? 😂

But seriously — Tom and his wonderful tipper crush are back this week! 🐄🦶

So if your cows are due for a foot trim, now is the time to hit him up and get those feet sorted.

Because I would much rather Tom do the routine maintenance things… so I don’t have to do the urgent, sore, pus-filled things later. 😅

Good feet = happier cows, happier farmers and a much happier vet.

So, who’s got some bovine pedicures overdue? 🐄💅

Heading to Mid North Coast NSW next week (14th Sept > ).

Nothing quite like a tonne of bull doing his thing… then strutting off like the absolute star he knows he is. 😂

Some days you nail it… and some days you have to back up and try again. 😅

And that’s life too. You’re not going to nail it every day, and it’s okay to not be okay all the time.

I think we can all see where the blood is currently going. 😂🐴

And a very Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there — horse dads, human dads and the dads who said “we are NOT getting another horse” but somehow ended up paying for it anyway. 🤣
