One of the perks of being a truffle dog handler is being a taste tester for all things truffle. It’s a hard job and a “sacrifice” we are happy to make. 🤤

Truffle season 2026 is officially over. Time to hang up the leads, clean the booties and most importantly rest up over the off season. Big thanks to all our valued clients who make this short seasonal pursuit so enjoyable with their welcoming manner. An equally big thanks to our families, who put up with some early starts, numerous days off booked out, and muddy paw prints throughout the house. 🐾

A shout out to the small ones. In truffling size usually does matter to the truffiere owners, whereas the handlers are still amazed at how our dogs can find the smallest truffles buried deep underground. The power of the nose. 🐾

Unearthing some hidden delights at the forever bountiful Lovely Valley Truffles, including a 350 gram monster.

It’s that time of year when and expand their scent detection skills by hunting for the white truffle (aka the “Bianchetto” or “Tuber Borchii”) as well as the usual but also exceptional black truffle.

We are starting to see a few white truffle ripen enough to harvest, releasing their beautiful garlicky/mushroom aroma.

We are very fortunate here in SA to grow such beautiful white truffles, often harvesting well into September.

Definitely one of our all-time favourites.

To be a true truffle hunter, you gotta really love the smell……and taste of dirt.

2026 has already been a huge year for our Biosecurity Detection Dogs. We have been working on multiple projects with and including Giant Pine Scale surveillance.

Our incredible team of dogs consistently demonstrate how important they are to the biosecurity challenges South Australia faces every day.

If you spot suspicious white, cotton-like wax on pine or other susceptible conifer trees, report it via the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881 or through the PIRSA website.

Even working dogs need time to get away for some self reflection, deep thoughts and working out how they fit in this crazy thing called life.

When it comes to keeping Australia safe from exotic pests no stone is left unturned, or in this case, no pipe is left unsniffed.

Gus and Bella have had a busy few days on biosecurity scent work, doing their part to help keep South Australia pest free. They’ll rest their noses over the weekend before a packed few months ahead, then switch focus as truffle season 2026 approaches.
