What does working on dog-to-dog reactivity actually look like?

Before deciding how we’re going to approach the behaviour, we collect background information and look at your dog’s history. We work to understand what is actually contributing to the reactivity, because reactivity is a description of behaviour — not an explanation for why it’s happening.

Is there a genetic component?

Were there gaps or negative experiences during critical developmental periods?

Is fear or insecurity involved?

Is frustration or over-arousal playing a role?

Has the behaviour been rehearsed so often that your dog has become very good at it — or even gets a kick out of doing it?

We also look at the equipment you’re currently using and discuss whether it’s helping you communicate with and manage your dog effectively — or potentially making things harder for both of you.

From there, we start building skills.

That might mean better engagement with the handler, clearer communication, improving obedience around distractions, changing emotional responses, building confidence, improving impulse control, or simply creating better strategies for situations the dog currently struggles with.

And importantly, the approach won’t look exactly the same for every dog, because the reason behind the behaviour isn’t always the same.

My two recently got some new martingale collars and leads from Brisbane based Arctic Mist. Great range and good quality, the leads are super soft to hold and the collars easy to adjust to slip over heads. Highly recommend if you’re looking to spruce up your dogs equipment. And I had so much fun finding their “colour”

What do you guys think? 💛🧡💛🧡

DON’T FEEL DISHEARTENED IF YOUR DOG BEHAVES BETTER FOR THE TRAINER 🐾

I hear this from owners all the time:

“They never do that for me!”
“Why are they so good for you?”
“You make it look so easy!”

But here’s the thing…

A dog trainer only has to get it right for that 30 minutes or one-hour session.

At home, you’re living real life.

You’re cooking dinner. The kids need you. The phone rings. You’re tired. You’re running late. And sometimes you accidentally reward something you didn’t mean to, give in because it’s easier in that moment, or simply don’t have the energy to turn everything into a training opportunity.

That’s normal.

I actually learnt a lot about this when therapists used to come and work with my autistic daughter. I’d watch how beautifully things could go during a focused therapy session — and then realise how much harder it was to maintain that same consistency throughout everyday family life.

Dog training is much the same.

As trainers, we have the advantage of stepping into a session completely focused on your dog, their behaviour and our timing. We’re not simultaneously trying to cook dinner, answer a child and remember what we walked into the laundry for. 😂

And trainers have bad sessions too.

Sometimes our timing is off. Sometimes our own dogs have an ordinary day. Sometimes a training session just doesn’t go how we planned or we wish we had handled something differently.

One bad session doesn’t undo your progress. One difficult day doesn’t mean your training isn’t working.

Training isn’t about being perfect every minute of every day. It’s about becoming a little more consistent over time.

So if your dog suddenly looks like an angel when the trainer takes the lead… don’t be discouraged.

Take it as something positive: Your dog CAN do it!
