We have been quiet over the past few weeks dealing with a pretty strong virus, and we are feeling well enough to venture out to the gardens to soak up sunshine and fresh air. We discovered this rather large larvae. Very curious as to what it might be…. Anyone up for guessing???

What a month it has been in the Northern Rivers. Heart breaking and opening, villages destroyed and communities reunited, waterfalls created and many tear shed, so much lost, and so much discovered. And kindness has been the soothing balm through it all. More than ever, it feels important to slow down and listen to the wisdom of nature, and the indigenous elders of these lands. We feel infinitely grateful for all we have and inspired to learn as much as we can from the events of the past month.

Today we made bunya nut pesto with tulsi basil, kale, cuban oregano and lime.

It was filling, delicious and nutritious and upon closer consideration the perfect food to eat as I consider my connection to country and what it means to celebrate and mourn our Australian history... some food for though so to speak!

The Bunya nut or “Araucaria Bidwillii” is native to south-eastern Queensland, especially the Bunya Mountains. At this site when the Bunya would ripen and fall from the giant tree the indigenous peoples from far and wide would put aside their differences and come together. It was possibly the largest traditional festival in Australia and people would stay for months to celebrate, feast on the Bunya nut, have ceremonies, dispute settlements and fights, arrange marriages and trade goods.

Today I eat this revered food with full gratitude, and thank the indigenous people for doing their best to protect it from settlers who sought its timber.

The Bunya pine is the last surviving species of the Bunya genus of Araucaria which was widespread during the Mesozoic age and some species have cone morphology similar to those around in the Jurassic period. The Bunya’s have survived many climatic and cultural changes on this ancient landscape and survived. What incredible resilience they possess!

They are a truly magnificent tree, and have a special place in Australian history.

I cannot recommend this course highly enough! Cyrano and I have already got so much out of it and we are only halfway through. And we are considering doing it a second time to deepen our understanding of the incredible education that it provides. Also loving the inclusion of a 10day hands on component! Wow, really feeling the benefit of the work we have been doing over the past 3 weeks during the REX online farm planning program. It has been deeply challenging taking a look at our holistic context, but feeling clearer because of this, and ready to tackle our refreshed and refined goals. Loved this quote from the late and great PA Yeomans,
so I thought to share...

THE ROLE OF AGRICULTURE is to produce food and fibre while the soil must always improve.’
~ P.A. Yeomans, The Challenge of Landscape (1958).

Third Spring on the farm and seeing some decent returns in the biannual/perennial flora department. This is a little snapshot of what is on after our gardens were left to go fallow for 4 months! I am really looking forward to planting more long term tree crops supported by Vetiver. Can you count all the different species and see which ones are totally wild?
