This winter we are adding a little extra gift to every online order ๐Ÿ’š

Every parcel will automatically receive a FREE packet of our Plantain Seeds (Plantago lanceolata) as a thank you for supporting our small family seed business this season.

Plantain is one of those beautiful old-fashioned garden plants that quietly gives back in so many ways. Itโ€™s fantastic for increasing biodiversity in the garden, attracting pollinators and beneficial insects while also providing habitat and food for many small creatures. The flowers are always buzzing with life here in our garden.

Itโ€™s a hardy, useful companion plant that fits beautifully into permaculture gardens, food forests, herb patches and wild corners. Plantain helps create a more balanced, living ecosystem and is a wonderful addition for anyone wanting to grow a richer, more diverse garden space.

Simply place your order and your free gift seed packet will be tucked into your parcel automatically ๐ŸŒฟ

Thank you all so much for supporting Companion Plant SeedCo โ€” every order genuinely means the world to our little backyard business.

Our ginger has been an absolute gem this season ๐ŸŒฑโœจ
Super productive harvests from a small little patch right here in our urban backyard in Mount Perry. What amazes us most is this was grown in some pretty heavy shade and still produced a bumper crop of beautiful healthy rhizomes!

A great reminder that you really donโ€™t need loads of space to grow your own food โ€” this entire harvest came from just a 1m square garden bed. The smell while harvesting is incredible tooโ€ฆ fresh, spicy and earthy all at once. Definitely one of our favourite garden growers this season ๐Ÿ’›

We are officially SOLD OUT of Garlic! ๐Ÿง„โœจ

A huge thank you to all of our wonderful supporters โ€” this has been our biggest garlic season yet! Weโ€™ve absolutely loved all the lovely enquiries, especially from so many people new to growing garlic and wanting to start their own small backyard patch of this family favourite.

This season we grew:
๐Ÿง„ Italian Pink
๐Ÿง„ Giant Russian
๐Ÿง„ Glen Large
๐Ÿง„ PLUS a new addition โ€” Australian Purple, which is already showing very promising results here in our North Burnett region.

For those in South East Queensland, Marchโ€“Aprilโ€“May is planting time for garlic, and now the fun begins! ๐ŸŒฑ

Time to share your sprout pics with us โ€” we canโ€™t wait to see how everyoneโ€™s garlic is growing and hear how your season unfolds! ๐Ÿ’š

This year has gifted us with an incredibly late watermelon harvest here in Mount Perry ๐Ÿ‰โœจ

Our final harvest basket has been filled with the most beautiful heirlooms โ€” rare Golden Honey watermelons alongside gigantic Moon & Stars whoppers reaching an impressive 11kg each!

Itโ€™s been a real balancing act these past few weeks between waiting for full maturity and trying to beat the frostโ€ฆ although amazingly, to date, we still havenโ€™t had one here yet. Nature always keeps you guessing ๐ŸŒฟ

Thankfully these beauties are now safely harvested and ready for processing. As one season winds down, the cool season succession planting continues steadily on, filling every empty space the summer crops leave behind ๐ŸŒฑ

Thereโ€™s something so satisfying about those final harvests of the season โ€” especially when they arrive this abundantly ๐Ÿ’›

With the cooler weather finally kicking in here in the North Burnett over recent weeks, our beautiful Zinnias have slowly been left to dry on the stem and naturally die back too ๐ŸŒธ๐Ÿ‚

These flowers bring so much joy, vibrant colour, pollinators and life to our little urban farm each season. Thereโ€™s something so special about watching them move through their full life cycle โ€” from tiny seed, to bursting blooms, and now back again to seed for the next generation.

Lucky weโ€™ve been busy out harvesting seed this past week, as the late rains have visited us once again this year! Seed harvesting can be tricky business sometimes, all about timing, patience and navigating the weatherโ€ฆ but this year has gifted us a bumper crop โœจ

Every flower head carefully collected now heads into its next stage of processing before being packaged up and sent off to their new homes this coming spring ๐ŸŒฑ

Itโ€™s one of our favourite parts of what we do โ€” helping keep beautiful, open-pollinated flowers growing in gardens far and wide while celebrating the seasons right here on the farm ๐Ÿ’›

๐ŸŒฟ Our Pigeon Pea plants are in full bloom at the moment, and every year they seem to signal the return of the beautiful King Parrots who happily share in the abundance with us. โค๏ธ๐Ÿฆœ

Today we were lucky enough to capture a beautiful shot of a Fire-tailed Resin Bee dancing amongst the gorgeous yellow blossoms โ€” a tiny reminder of just how alive and connected a thriving garden can be. ๐Ÿโœจ

Pigeon Pea really is one of the great givers in a permaculture garden or food forest. This incredible plant provides food, shelter, pollinator support, nitrogen fixing, mulch material and an abundance of fast-growing biomass to feed the soil and keep our critters happy. Itโ€™s super tough, resilient through harsh conditions, and grows quickly with very little fuss.

Plants like this remind us that a garden can be productive while still supporting biodiversity and sharing space with wildlife. The parrots feast, the bees dance, the soil is nourished, and we get to witness the beauty of it all. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ’›

๐ŸŒฟ Today is International Day for Biological Diversity ๐ŸŒฟ

A day to celebrate the incredible variety of life that keeps our ecosystems healthy, resilient & thriving โ€” from tiny soil microbes and native bees to birds, fungi, flowers, worms, and the food we grow. Biodiversity is what creates balance in nature, supports pollination, builds healthy soil, regulates pests naturally & helps our gardens withstand changing conditions.

Here on our Urban Farm, supporting biodiversity is at the heart of everything we do. We believe the more life you welcome in, the healthier your space becomes. ๐ŸŒฑ

Some of the ways we encourage biodiversity on our farm:
๐Ÿ Planting a wide diversity of flowers, herbs & edible crops
๐Ÿชฑ Building rich living soil through composting & worm farms
๐Ÿฆ‹ Letting some plants flower & go to seed for pollinators and wildlife๐Ÿ‚ Using mulch, chop & drop systems & leaving habitat spaces undisturbed
๐ŸŒพ Growing heirloom and open-pollinated varieties
๐Ÿž Avoiding synthetic sprays that harm beneficial insects
๐ŸŒป Creating year-round food sources for bees, butterflies & birds

The beautiful thing is โ€” you donโ€™t need a farm to support biodiversity. Every small space counts. ๐Ÿ’š

Simple ways YOU can help from a balcony to a backyard:
๐ŸŒฟ Grow even one flowering plant for pollinators
๐ŸŒฟ Leave a shallow dish of water out for insects & birds
๐ŸŒฟ Plant herbs like basil, dill, coriander, thyme or parsley and let some flower
๐ŸŒฟ Start a tiny compost bucket or worm farm
๐ŸŒฟ Avoid spraying chemicals where possible
๐ŸŒฟ Grow a mix of plants instead of just one type๐ŸŒฟ Leave some leaf litter or natural habitat corners for beneficial insects
๐ŸŒฟ Choose plants that flower across different seasons

Whether you have a few pots on a balcony or a large suburban yard, creating diversity creates life. And when we grow more life around us, we grow healthier food, healthier soil & stronger communities too. ๐ŸŒ

One of our absolute favourite greens we grow & eat on our Urban Farm is Wild Rocket. Once you let it go to seed, it readily self-sows everywhereโ€ฆ which means FREE food year after year ๐ŸŒฑ

For those that love their arugula โ€” this one is for you. Wild Rocket is much more delicate than traditional rocket, with a beautiful buttery zing that elevates salads, pizzas & fresh garden meals.

Itโ€™s one of those easy, rewarding greens that quietly becomes a staple in the backyard food garden. Sow it once, and nature does the rest.
