South East Vets is located in Mount Gambier and services the surrounding areas including Dartmoor, Port Macdonnell, Millicent, Kongorong, Glencoe, Kalangadoo, Tarpeena, Allendale East. We have a large newly renovated clinic in Mount Gambier to cater for all your pets needs. Our clinic is equipped with the latest in-house blood testing equipment, so we can diagnose your pets illness as quickly as p

ossible and begin treatment early. We also have Digital X-ray facilities allowing us to take radiographs, view them within a short amount of time and send radiographs to specialist referral centres. Our surgery uses the most up to date anaesthetic machines and monitoring equipment to provide the best possible care for your pet during surgery. Surgeries including desexing, soft tissue surgery, dental treatments and orthopaedic surgeries are performed Monday to Friday. As well as our companion animal clinic, we operate an on-farm service for cattle, horses, sheep and other farm animals. Our vets attend to emergencies such as calvings, downer cows, horses with colic and other routine call outs.

A healthy cat's breath shouldn't clear the room. 😮‍💨 Persistent bad breath is most often caused by dental disease, including gingivitis, periodontal disease, and painful tooth resorption, which affects many cats. 🦷 It can also signal problems elsewhere in the body, such as kidney disease or diabetes.

Because cats are experts at hiding pain, smelly breath may be the only clue. 🐱 If your cat's breath has turned foul, book a check-up so we can find the cause.

Water additives can be a helpful addition to your dog's dental care routine, with some products shown to reduce plaque and freshen breath. 💧 However, they're a supporting act, not the star. Nothing replaces daily tooth brushing and professional dental care. 🪥

Look for products carrying the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) seal, which means they've been independently tested for effectiveness. 🔎 Unsure which products are worthwhile? Ask us for a recommendation.

Dogs who love chewing balls, sticks, or bones often wear their teeth down over time. Slow, gradual wear may be harmless, as the tooth can protect itself by laying down extra dentine. 🦷

Rapid wear, however, can expose the sensitive pulp, causing pain and infection, often with no obvious signs. ⚠️ If your dog's teeth look flattened, have dark centres, or are chipped, book a dental check.

Swapping abrasive toys like tennis balls for softer chews helps prevent further damage. 🎾

An outdoor doghouse can provide shelter from wind and rain, but it is rarely adequate in very cold conditions unless insulated. Dogs left outside overnight may risk hypothermia, with puppies, seniors, and short-coated breeds especially at risk on freezing nights. ❄️

Bringing your dog indoors during cold snaps, even just to the laundry, can help keep them warm. If they must stay outside, ensure their shelter is insulated, dry, and draught-free. 🐾

This tiny joey was brought into our clinic by a kind member of the public.

At this young age, joeys are unable to survive on their own and require around-the-clock care, including warmth, regular feeding, and careful monitoring. Our team cared for this little one until an experienced wildlife carer was able to take over its ongoing hand-rearing.

A big thank you to the member of the public who stopped to help and ensured the joey received the care it needed.

Unfortunately, large and giant-breed, deep-chested dogs can be at particular risk of developing a life-threatening condition known as GDV. ⚠️

GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus), or bloat, occurs when the pet’s stomach twists and then swells with gas. As well as being highly painful, affected dogs can become suddenly and severely unwell with symptoms of shock (poor blood flow), breathing difficulties and organ damage, and usually require emergency surgery.

If your dog is of a predisposed breed, we’d recommend having a chat with our vets regarding symptoms to watch for and measures for GDV prevention, including the option of gastropexy surgery to prevent stomach twisting. 🐾

It’s understandable that your cat may just want to curl up by the heater 24/7 during the chilly winter weather. ❄️

However, it’s important to encourage them to partake in regular physical activity, particularly if they live indoors full-time.

Sedentary, overweight cats can sadly be at an increased risk of some worrying health issues, such as:

⚠️ Skin disease
⚠️ Osteoarthritis
⚠️ Diabetes
⚠️ Certain types of cancer

We had the absolute pleasure of meeting these adorable Miniature Fox Terrier x Chihuahua puppies as they came in for their very first vaccinations!

Puppy vaccinations are an important part of protecting your new best friend from serious infectious diseases and helping them get off to the best possible start in life.

At 7 weeks of age these little cuties weighed only around 500g each! We look forward to seeing how much they grow between now and their next vaccinations.

Do pets get dandruff? 🐾

They can! Dandruff in pets appears as small white or grey flakes in their fur, and their skin may also look dry or rough as well.

Dry, flaky skin in pets can be caused by:

💡 Overbathing
💡 A deficiency of omega fatty acids
💡 Skin parasites, allergies or infections
💡 An underlying condition affecting skin health, such as Cushing’s disease (a hormonal imbalance)
💡 Genetic skin conditions, which are more common in certain breeds like Cocker Spaniels

If you notice any unusual skin changes in your pet, it’s best to “get the skinny” from our vets about what could be going on. Contact our clinic for personalised advice.
